Dimensions and historical prices in the table are Stockton’s 2024 reporting, not confirmation of current stock or price. The models represent different priorities, so a larger water-resistance number or a mechanical movement does not automatically make one the better choice for you.
Best for a chronograph: Brew Metric
Stockton’s pick for a chronograph is the Brew Metric, which uses a Seiko VK68 meca-quartz movement. It combines quartz timekeeping with a chronograph mechanism; the article reports a date, running seconds, and a 60-minute counter. Its seconds track highlights the 25–35-second interval as a reference to espresso extraction.
The reported 36 mm width and 41.5 mm length give it a compact footprint on paper. The 2024 article also lists a 316L stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal, and 50 m water resistance. That rating is not, by itself, a complete recommendation for swimming or other water use; follow the maker’s instructions for the exact reference and its condition.

Stockton reported a starting price of US$450, roughly €425, at publication in 2024. That is a historical starting price, not a current euro-market quote. Check the exact model, availability, and delivered price before deciding whether it fits your budget.
Best for a dive-watch brief: Certina DS Action Diver 38mm Titanium
The Certina is the most capable water-focused option among the three as described in the 2024 article: an automatic titanium diver rated to 300 m, with a 38 mm case, 45 mm length, and 12.2 mm thickness. Stockton reported the Powermatic 80 movement. The nylon-strap version was listed at €985, while the bracelet version was €1,075, so only the former sat below the article’s €1,000 ceiling at that time.

Check the exact reference and market
Price is the main qualification if you are shopping today. Certina’s official Swiss DS Action collection lists the 38 mm titanium family at CHF 925, while Certina Austria lists it at €1,085; those are separate regional listings, not a direct currency comparison. The Austrian price exceeds the €1,000 threshold. Verify the country, tax treatment, strap or bracelet, and reference before treating this as an under-€1,000 option. For reference C048.807.44.041.00, Certina’s official product sheet lists a 38 mm titanium case, Powermatic 80.611 movement, 80-hour power reserve, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, and 19 mm lug width. Certina’s 2026 model announcement describes 300 m water resistance and grade 2 titanium. These details should not be assumed to apply identically to every configuration discussed in the 2024 article; match the reference on the listing or warranty card. Best for a dressier, slimmer watch: Baltic MR01
The Baltic MR01 is the most formal-leaning option in Stockton’s trio. The 2024 article reports a 36 mm diameter, 44 mm lug-to-lug length, and 9.9 mm thickness, along with an automatic Hangzhou CAL5000A micro-rotor movement. The gold-plated version was listed at €650 in that article. Treat that price, as well as the article’s report of four color schemes, as historical: verify which variants are currently offered and in stock.
The article did not state a water-resistance rating for the MR01. Do not infer its suitability for water exposure from its appearance or from the ratings of the other watches; consult the exact model’s current specifications and care guidance.

Stockton also reported that Baltic aimed to handle repairs within three weeks. That is a dated statement about the brand’s stated approach, not a guaranteed current turnaround. If service time matters, ask Baltic or the seller about the present process, location, costs, and warranty coverage before buying.
Choose by fit, movement, and use
- For a chronograph: The Brew adds stopwatch functions and a compact reported case footprint, but its meca-quartz movement differs from the automatic movements in the other two.
- For a mechanical diver: The Certina offers the strongest stated water-resistance rating of this group, but its current euro price can exceed the budget depending on market and configuration.
- For dressier wear: The Baltic is the thinnest of the three by the 2024 measurements and uses an automatic micro-rotor movement. Its water-resistance figure was not stated in that article.
- For wrist fit: Brew’s reported 41.5 mm length is shortest; the Certina’s is 45 mm, while the Baltic’s lug-to-lug is 44 mm. These measurements are not the whole fit story: case shape, thickness, lug profile, and strap or bracelet all affect how a watch wears. Try one on if possible.
- For ownership: Consider the movement’s service needs, parts and repair support, seller reputation, and warranty terms alongside the purchase price.

Should you consider a vintage watch instead?
Stockton also recommends considering vintage watches, naming later Tissot, Omega, and Seiko models as possibilities under €1,000. Vintage is a different kind of purchase, not a like-for-like substitute for a new watch: condition, authenticity, service history, and future repair needs vary from one individual watch to another.
