Lex Stolk’s June 19, 2024 shortlist of new watches under €5,000 features three very different choices: the understated, hand-wound Grand Seiko SBGW231; Frederique Constant’s green moonphase-and-date Manufacture Classic; and the limited-edition Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows. It is a dated editorial selection—not a current, exhaustive ranking—and its euro prices should be read as historical rather than today’s offers.
What Lex Stolk’s shortlist covers
Stolk set out to choose brand-new watches from well-respected brands, without relying on pre-owned alternatives. The result spans a compact dress watch, a dressier complication and a more assertive aviation-inspired sports watch. The picks are best compared by style, movement and stated specifications, not treated as three interchangeable ways to spend the same budget.
His original framing was: “No pre-owned shortcuts, just brand-new watches; that was my mantra when putting together my edition of The Best Watches Under €5,000.” Read Stolk’s June 19, 2024 article at Fratello.

Grand Seiko SBGW231: a quiet, hand-wound dress watch
Stolk’s first pick is the SBGW231 from Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection. Its appeal is restraint: a round case and understated dial leave the attention to the details, including Zaratsu-polished surfaces and finely finished hands and indexes. Stolk preferred it on a different strap from the one supplied, and noted that the budget allowed room for a replacement.
The article gives dimensions of 37.3 × 44.3 × 11.6 mm and a June 2024 price of €4,600. Those are historical figures, not a current quote. Current regional pricing and availability were not established, so check with Grand Seiko or an authorized retailer before treating the model as obtainable at that price.

- CERAMIC ROTATING BEZEL – Features a durable ceramic bezel ring with an anti-clockwise rotating bezel.
- SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL – Domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with antireflective coating for enhanced clarity.
- BUILT FOR ADVENTURE – Stainless steel case, screw-down crown, helium valve, and durable black rubber strap.
Frederique Constant FC-716GR3H6: green dial, moonphase and date
The Manufacture Classic Moonphase Date brings the most visible dial color of the three picks: a green sunray finish paired with a moonphase display and hand-indicated date. Stolk’s 2024 article identifies the reference as FC-716GR3H6, notes its 40 mm case—down from a 42 mm predecessor—and reports a €3,895 price at the time.
Frederique Constant’s official EU listing currently identifies the same reference with a 40 mm stainless-steel case, 11.78 mm thickness, 5 ATM water resistance and 20 mm lug width. It specifies an automatic FC-716 calibre with a 72-hour power reserve, moonphase, hand-indicated date and a five-year warranty. The page showed dispatch within five days when accessed, but that estimate can change; it did not show a euro price in the retrieved listing. The 2024 €3,895 figure should therefore not be read as today’s price.

- Discover the future of modern design. The BOLD Collection is defined by unexpected materials, vibrant colors, and a dynamic aesthetic.
- The BOLD Fusion Automatic features a bold, sporty case with a modern edge. This 44mm watch has a black exhibition dial, yellow goldtone centerzone, Swiss Super-LumiNova accents, and an automatic movement with an exhibition case back.
- Automatic watch: These timepieces are powered by the movement of the wrist, without the need for any external power source.
- Caring for your timepiece: Your Movado watch has been crafted with exceptional attention to quality, function, and detail. We recommend a maintenance interval of 3 to 5 years to ensure optimal performance. Avoid opening the watch yourself for any adjustments.
- Water Resistant: Up to 50m (165ft): Wearable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but not diving or snorkeling; 5 ATM.
Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows: a limited aviation-inspired sports watch
The Breitling brings the strongest sports-watch profile: a blue-and-black dial, Red Arrows insignia, steel case and automatic Breitling 17 movement. Stolk’s June 2024 article reports dimensions of 42 × 51.2 × 12.1 mm, 300 m water resistance, approximately 38 hours of reserve and a 360-piece edition. It also says that a percentage of sales goes to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
Stolk listed £3,900 on bracelet and £3,650 on blue leather; his €4,615 conversion of the bracelet price applied specifically to June 19, 2024. Breitling’s official UK listing now shows £3,950 including VAT for the exact reference, confirms the 360-piece limit and the charitable contribution, and specifies a 42 mm case, 12.15 mm thickness, 300 m water resistance and approximately 38-hour reserve. The UK list price is not a current euro price and does not establish stock in other markets.

- Case Size: 40.00 millimeter; Band Width: 12 millimeter; Case Thickness: 10.40 millimeter
- Swiss quartz movement, 316L stainless steel case, Index dial type, date
- Stainless steel bracelet, butterfly clasp with push-buttons closure
- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 meter / 330 feet): Suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
Which pick fits your priorities?
- Choose the Grand Seiko for understated dress-watch character. Its hand-wound format, modest stated dimensions and carefully finished surfaces make it the most restrained option. Current stock and regional price need checking.
- Choose the Frederique Constant for a dial-side complication. It combines a moonphase and date with a 72-hour reserve, while its official EU listing provides current specifications and warranty information.
- Choose the Breitling for a more robust sports-watch specification and limited-edition identity. Its 300 m rating and 360-piece run distinguish it from the other two; its verified current price here is in the UK market, not euros.
Water-resistance figures are not equivalent: the Frederique Constant is rated at 5 ATM and the Breitling at 300 m, while the cited article does not state a water-resistance figure for the Grand Seiko. Do not infer the same water-use suitability across all three.

The shortlist’s euro prices belong to June 2024: €4,600 for the Grand Seiko, €3,895 for the Frederique Constant and a converted €4,615 for the Breitling bracelet version. They are useful as a record of Stolk’s selection at that date, not as current buying prices. The currently listed Breitling figure above is a UK price, while the Frederique Constant page is an EU listing without a displayed euro price; these are not like-for-like regional offers.
