The black-dial Zenith Chronomaster Original is a 38 mm steel chronograph that pairs a matte black dial and silver-toned counters with Zenith’s El Primero 3600 movement. Its most distinctive function is the central chronograph hand: it makes one full turn every 10 seconds, so the dial indicates tenths of a second rather than using the usual one-turn-per-minute chronograph seconds hand. The calfskin-strap version covered here is reference 03.3200.3600/21.C903.
What distinguishes the black-dial Chronomaster Original?
Zenith introduced the black tricolour dial as a permanent addition to the Chronomaster Original line in a September 5, 2023 announcement. It reverses the familiar light-dial treatment: a matte black base is set against silver-toned counters, with a red central chronograph hand providing a bright point of contrast. The dial retains the collection’s three-counter arrangement.

The reference-specific specification for the beige calfskin version is 03.3200.3600/21.C903. Zenith lists a 38 mm stainless-steel case, sapphire display back, date at 4:30, beige calfskin strap and stainless-steel folding clasp. The black-dial announcement also discusses a redesigned steel bracelet, but that bracelet configuration should not be confused with the C903 strap reference.
How does the 1/10-second chronograph display work?
The automatic El Primero 3600 runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz. When the chronograph is running, its central hand completes one rotation of the dial in 10 seconds. The scale therefore lets the wearer read tenths of a second directly. This differs from a conventional chronograph seconds hand, which generally takes a minute to make one full rotation.

The central hand is the tenths indicator; two smaller counters provide longer elapsed-time readings. Zenith lists a 60-minute counter at six o’clock and a 60-second counter at three. The movement has an approximately 60-hour power reserve, according to Zenith. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent timing-test results.
How does it relate to the A386?
Zenith presents the Chronomaster Original as a modern successor to the steel A386, which the brand dates to 1969. The company says the 38 mm case preserves the historical model’s proportions. The black-dial version carries that case design into a contrasting palette rather than reproducing the A386’s familiar light-dial appearance. Zenith’s September 2023 announcement described the black tricolour model as a permanent collection addition, available through its boutiques and authorized retailers around the world at that time. The C903 specification sheet lists CHF 8,400, but that is a historical 2021 price, not a current quote. Current pricing, stock and regional availability need to be confirmed with Zenith or an authorized retailer.
