Introduced in November 2022, the Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto puts an unusual feature on the dial: a mechanical chime that sounds once each hour. Its FS01 module strikes a tuned spring, but the watch does not chime on demand and is not a minute repeater.
What makes the C1 Bel Canto chime?
Christopher Ward developed the FS01 chiming module with technical director Frank Stelzer and mounted it above a Sellita SW200-1 base movement. The company says the striking mechanism comprises more than 60 new components; the base movement provides a 38-hour power reserve. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Christopher Ward’s product information says the sound is tuned to a D note, after the company tested more than 80 spring and hammer variants during development.
On the hour, the mechanism strikes a tuned spring to produce a passing chime. A pusher at 4 o’clock switches the chime on or off, and a dial indicator shows its setting. The watch therefore adds an hourly acoustic signal to timekeeping; it is not a device for requesting a chime at will.
Is the Bel Canto a minute repeater?
No. A minute repeater chimes on demand, typically sounding the hours, quarters and minutes when its mechanism is activated. The C1 Bel Canto instead produces one passing chime at the top of each hour when its chime function is switched on. It does not repeat the time on demand.

Original C1 Bel Canto specifications
The original model’s owner’s manual lists these dimensions and materials:

These figures describe the original model, not necessarily later variants. The manual gives a 30 m water-resistance rating but does not recommend swimming with the watch. Consult the C1 Bel Canto owner’s manual for operating instructions.

The November 2022 debut and early editions
Hodinkee reported that the first blue limited edition was capped at 300 pieces and sold out in eight hours. A green edition released four days later reportedly sold out in three hours. These are launch-era sales reports from 2022; they do not establish present availability or inventory. Hodinkee’s launch coverage provides the debut context.
How the later Bel Canto versions differ
The Classic and Lumière arrived after the original debut and should be treated as distinct variants rather than folded into the original model’s specifications.

Bel Canto Classic
Fratello’s October 2024 report describes the Classic with a laser-etched guilloché dial, Roman numerals and a simpler handset. It says the core hourly-chime architecture remains.
