The CITIZEN’s new Tosa washi dials are more than decorative paper: their translucence lets light reach the Eco-Drive solar cell, while their fibers and patterns give each watch a distinct appearance. Announced on September 17, 2026, the limited-edition AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B use different kinds of washi and dial treatments.
What is a Tosa washi dial?
Tosa washi is traditional Japanese paper made in Kochi Prefecture. In The CITIZEN watches, it serves as a translucent dial material: the paper’s texture and fibers remain visible, while light can pass through toward the Eco-Drive system beneath. Citizen says it has used Tosa washi on The CITIZEN dials since 2017. Citizen’s September 2026 announcement describes the combination of delicate patterns and light permeability.

The paper is not necessarily an unsupported sheet forming the entire dial. Citizen describes layered constructions that can include transparent plates, gradations and other treatments alongside the washi. The material is therefore both a design surface and part of the watch’s light-powered function.
How does washi paper work with Eco-Drive?
Eco-Drive converts light into energy. A dial placed over its solar cell must admit enough light for the system, even as it provides the watch’s visible design. Citizen says Tosa washi offers that light permeability while contributing texture and pattern. The company also says Eco-Drive eliminates the need for regular battery changes; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test findings.

Washi’s appeal comes from that practical and visual balance. Its fibers can create a subtle surface or more pronounced patterns, but the treatment has to preserve light transmission. Citizen’s account of its indigo process illustrates the constraint: temperature, humidity and raw materials can affect both dye and permeability, so the workshop adjusts the dyeing to achieve the intended intensity while retaining light transmission.
What is the difference between the AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B?
Both watches were announced on September 17, 2026, and Citizen rates each at ±5 seconds per year. Their dial papers, colors and case-and-strap treatments are distinct.

Citizen says artisans make the dials in Kochi Prefecture and that each one is unique. That variation is part of the material’s character, not a claim that every watch has an identical pattern. The company also specifies a perpetual calendar, impact detection and lock, automatic hand correction, and an instant date change at midnight for both models. Its perpetual calendar adjusts through February 28, 2100.

The newly announced AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B are two current examples, but they show different ways the material can be treated. Other Citizen references provide useful context without sharing the new pair’s color or specifications.

- Indigo-dyed dials: Citizen says the washi for its indigo models is hand-dyed at an artisanal workshop in Tokushima using a traditional fermentation process with Japanese indigo. Natural and workshop conditions influence the resulting shade and light permeability.
- Green AQ4091-56W: Citizen says it combines indigo with yellow dye from Japanese silver grass to create green using plant dyes. Its model page lists a limited edition of 650 pieces worldwide. This is a separate color-making approach, not the treatment used for the red and white 2026 watches.
- Indigo AQ6110-10L: Citizen specifies annual accuracy of ±1 second for this model, compared with ±5 seconds per year for the new AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B. These are manufacturer specifications, not a comparative independent accuracy test.

The paper treatment is the most obvious distinction between the two 2026 watches, but the case and strap change the overall look as well. Choose the red Tengujoshi and platinum-treated bracelet if you want the darker dial treatment and matching metal finish; the Unryushi model pairs its white, gold-flecked fibers with a pink-toned case and crocodile leather strap.

Both are described as limited editions, but an edition label does not establish whether a watch is currently available. Citizen’s published specifications also should not be mistaken for independent durability or accuracy test results.
