The Collector’s Corner: The Youngtimer Appeal of the TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 36

The TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 36 pairs 1970s racing heritage and a cushion case with an El Primero-derived movement in a distinctive 2001 re-edition.

The TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 36 is an early-2000s re-edition that pairs the Monza’s racing-linked story and cushion-shaped case with a high-frequency Zenith El Primero-derived chronograph movement. Collectors may call it a “youngtimer”: an informal way to describe a relatively recent watch with vintage character, not an official age category. Its appeal lies in that unusual mix—and in its quieter place beside better-known TAG Heuer chronographs.

What is the TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 36?

It is a modern-era Monza chronograph from TAG Heuer’s 2001 Classics re-edition period. The model revisits a name rooted in 1970s motor racing, but it is not a reissue of one specific original configuration: its movement, case execution and dial details belong to a later generation.

TAG Heuer’s vintage history places the El Primero-powered Monza Calibre 36 among the Classics releases introduced in 2001. Monochrome Watches’ 2023 guide also identifies it as the 2001 iteration. The “youngtimer” label is collector framing for its blend of relatively recent manufacture and retro design, rather than a formal TAG Heuer classification.

How the Monza name became connected to racing

Heuer introduced the Monza in 1976 after Ferrari won the 1975 Formula One constructors’ championship and Niki Lauda won the drivers’ title at Monza. The watch commemorated that partnership. TAG Heuer’s official Monza history describes the original’s black-chromium-coated base-metal case and matte black dial, a look informed by racing instruments.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The early Monza was mechanically and visually distinct from the Calibre 36. The original used Calibre 15, with running seconds at 10 and a 30-minute chronograph recorder at 3; later Calibre 12 versions used a 12-hour recorder at 9. The Calibre 36 therefore continues the name and racing association, not the original movement layout.

What movement is inside the Calibre 36 Monza?

TAG Heuer Calibre 36 is based on the Zenith El Primero calibre 400. TAG Heuer’s vintage collection history confirms the El Primero connection for the Monza Calibre 36. Monochrome’s 2023 specialist guide reports the following detailed specifications:

Reference Dial Reported case and water resistance
CR5110.FC6175 Black 39.5 mm diameter, 14 mm height and 50 m water resistance, as reported for CR5110 by Monochrome Watches in 2023
CR5111.FC6176 Silver not stated in the cited guide for this reference

These are source-reported identifiers and specifications, not a guarantee that any particular listing is correctly described or in original condition. For a candidate watch, compare the reference with clear photographs of the dial, case and movement, and ask for documentation that supports its identity and service history.

Why collectors find this Monza distinctive

A less usual case for a chronograph

The cushion-shaped case breaks from the familiar round chronograph template while retaining a strong period feel. Combined with the textured dial and applied markers described by Monochrome, it gives this version a more refined presentation than the instrument-like simplicity of the first Monza.

Racing history with a different movement story

The watch connects the Monza name to Ferrari and Lauda, while the El Primero-derived Calibre 36 brings a distinct chronograph lineage. That combination—rather than any single feature alone—is central to its collector interest.

A quieter corner of the TAG Heuer family

Monochrome characterizes the Monza as a “dark horse” in TAG Heuer’s chronograph lineup, noting that it has not had the staying power of the Monaco, Carrera or Autavia. Calling the Calibre 36 under-the-radar is a qualitative collector judgment, not a measured claim about production numbers or market rarity.

How to compare it with other Monzas

When comparing the Calibre 36 with earlier Monzas or other TAG Heuer chronographs, focus on differences that can be checked rather than relying on the family name alone:

  • Movement: Calibre 36 / El Primero basis versus 1970s Calibre 15 or Calibre 12, or early-2000s modular ETA chronograph versions.
  • Case and dial: cushion shape, reported dimensions, finishing and the black or silver dial variant.
  • Chronograph layout: subdial arrangement, date position and movement architecture.
  • Condition and evidence: reference consistency, originality, case wear, seller provenance and available service records.

What is—and is not—established about rarity and price

The sources cited here do not establish a production total for CR5110 or CR5111, so a numbered limited run or production-based rarity claim is not supported. Nor do they establish current value, present-day availability, service costs, parts status or a model-specific service interval.

Monochrome’s 22 December 2023 article said it saw four Chrono24 listings for the model, all black dial, at EUR 2,560–3,770. That was a dated snapshot of asking prices, not completed-sale results or a current valuation; it should not be used as a present-day price guide.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the reference. Compare the seller’s stated reference with the dial color and visible watch details; request clear photographs rather than relying on a title or stock image.
  2. Assess condition and originality. Look closely at the case, dial, hands and chronograph operation, and ask what components or finishes have been replaced or altered.
  3. Request provenance and service records. Documentation can help clarify ownership and past work, though the cited sources do not establish a specific service interval or cost for this model.
  4. Evaluate price using current evidence. Check dated listings and, where available, completed sales for the same reference and comparable condition. Do not treat a historical asking-price snapshot as a current market value.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
