What is the UR-103? It is URWERK’s early 21st-century interpretation of wandering hours: four hour-bearing satellites travel across a minute scale, turning time-reading into a small mechanical performance. Introduced in 2003 and discontinued at the end of 2010, the UR-103 is also a study in contrasts—an unconventional display on the front and a precise, instrument-like control board on the back.
How to read the UR-103’s wandering hours
Look at the minute arc first. The satellite currently crossing it carries the hour numeral; its position along the arc shows the minutes. As that satellite reaches the end of the scale, the next satellite takes its place at the beginning. The result is a conventional reading—hour and minutes—presented through a display that moves differently from hands on a dial.
URWERK describes four orbiting and rotating satellites. An orbital cross carries them around the display, completing one revolution beneath the satellites every four hours. Within the system, a Geneva cross governs the rotation of each satellite. These linked motions let one satellite indicate the hour while traversing the minute chapter, then hand off to the next.
The arrangement is more than a visual flourish: it changes where the eye looks to read the time. URWERK calls the display an unusual reinterpretation of wandering hours. In the brand’s collector feature, SJX recalled the watch as “outrageous but also extraordinary” at its introduction—a personal retrospective, not a claim of universal reception. URWERK’s collector story also quotes co-founder and designer Martin Frei calling it “a futuristic timepiece.”

The reverse is an instrument panel
The front draws attention with its moving hours; the back is organized around adjustment and monitoring. URWERK says the control board takes inspiration from the rear-facing indications of marine chronometers. It places several functions where a wearer can access them without making them part of the main display.
- Power-reserve indicator: a glance at the remaining running time.
- Setting dials: controls for setting the minutes and seconds, as described by URWERK.
- Fine-tuning screw: a user-adjustable regulator for fine rate adjustment.
The back makes the UR-103 feel less like a conventional dial watch turned inside out than a compact mechanical instrument. It also gives a prospective buyer features to inspect closely: the controls should be present and intact, and their operation is worth having assessed by a qualified watchmaker.

Movement, dimensions and specifications
URWERK’s current historical-model page lists a manual-wind calibre 3.03 running at 21,600 beats per hour (3 Hz), in a case measuring 50 × 36 × 13.5 mm. The dimensions describe a broad, relatively slim rectangular presence; the unusual display and rear controls make the watch’s proportions part of its identity, not simply a matter of wrist fit.
The same page identifies a non-magnetic ARCAP P40 triple base plate. An archival technical PDF describes the orbital cross as titanium, the triple base plate as ARCAP and the hour satellites as aluminium. These are family-level specifications, not a guarantee that every variation uses identical materials; confirm the details for the particular reference being considered.

Power reserve is the notable specification discrepancy. URWERK’s current historical page gives 43 hours, as does its archival press release, while an archival technical PDF gives 36 hours. The documents do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as applying uniformly to every UR-103. The technical PDF also lists 21 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 3ATM pressure testing; these, too, are archival specifications to verify against the individual watch.

From the 2003 launch to the end of production
URWERK’s official history dates the UR-103.01 launch to 2003, after what the brand describes as six years of hardship and struggle. It says production of the 103 collection ended at the close of 2010. That seven-year production span gives the UR-103 a clear place in the brand’s early development, before it became a discontinued collector’s watch.
The current historical page groups Red Gold, White Gold, Altin, Shining T and Tarantula among the variations. A final-edition release discusses the UR-103T Mexican Fireleg and Shining T; it identifies the Mexican Fireleg as a limited edition of 60 pieces. The names do not establish that all versions share the same case construction, movement specification or production quantity. Reference-specific documentation matters more than assuming a single specification for the whole family.

Because the collection includes documented variations and the published reserve figures differ, start with the identity of the specific watch, not with a generic UR-103 specification sheet. Ask for clear photographs of the front, back, case sides, clasp or buckle, and any reference markings, then compare the seller’s claims with papers and other records.
- Confirm reference and variation. Establish the exact version and, where available, its serial or other identifying details. Check that stated materials and specifications are appropriate to that version.
- Assess condition. Review the case and crystal for damage or refinishing, and request information about the movement’s condition and performance. A specialist inspection can help distinguish visible wear from concerns that require opening the watch.
- Request service and provenance records. Ask for dated service documentation and ownership history where available. If records are absent, treat the watch’s service status as unverified rather than assuming it has recently been maintained.
- Check completeness. Record what is included—box, papers, buckle and other accessories—and compare that list with the seller’s description. A catalogue entry can be useful as an example of the details to document: Phillips’ URWERK catalogue entry specifies attributes such as case material, calibre, jewel count, buckle and presentation packaging.
- Read the transaction terms. For a dealer, auction or private sale, understand the return or cancellation terms, any condition guarantees, and who is responsible for fees and shipping before committing.
A single auction catalogue or asking price cannot establish a market-wide value or price trend. Compare examples only after accounting for their actual variation, condition, records and completeness.
