The Rolex Milgauss is a mechanical watch developed to resist magnetic interference: Rolex says its 1956 design was intended to withstand up to 1,000 gauss and used an internal shield to protect the movement. Rolex identifies the 6541 with that 1956 introduction, while Phillips describes the 6543 and 6541 as early versions later superseded by the 1019. The modern 116400 GV appears in Rolex’s 2014 collection history; a dealer subsequently reported that the 116400 family was discontinued in 2023.
What is a Rolex Milgauss?
The Milgauss is Rolex’s anti-magnetic watch. Its defining feature is an internal shield intended to protect the movement from magnetic interference. Rolex’s retrospective account says the watch was created in 1956 to withstand up to 1,000 gauss, and that CERN researchers tested it.
Rolex’s account describes the problem the watch addressed: magnetic fields could disrupt mechanical watches. The Milgauss’s history is therefore both a story of watchmaking and of an engineering response to the needs of people working around scientific equipment.

The Milgauss and magnetic fields
Rolex’s account traces the Milgauss to a practical problem: magnetic waves could interfere with the operation of mechanical watches. Rolex says it created the model in 1956 with an internal shield to protect the movement and a design intended to withstand up to 1,000 gauss.

- Domed mineral crystal lens; light champagne dial with gold-tone hands and crystal accented markers
- Gold-tone adjustable link bracelet; fold over clasp with double push-button safety
- Inner band circumference: 7 inches
- Japanese quartz movement
- Case diameter: 36 millimeters
The name and technical premise set the Milgauss apart within Rolex’s collection. Rather than relying only on a distinctive exterior, the watch was designed around protection for the movement. The stated 1,000-gauss figure comes from Rolex’s retrospective account, not from an independent test report included in the research available for this article.
The CERN connection
Rolex says CERN researchers tested the Milgauss. This supports describing a real connection between the watch and the research organization, but it does not establish that CERN formally commissioned the model or that CERN distributed watches to all its researchers.
Rolex’s official account also says that, in the 1950s, engineers and technicians found magnetic waves disrupted the functioning of their mechanical watches. The statement is Rolex’s retrospective description; no individual speaker is identified.

Reference 6543 and reference 6541
Rolex identifies reference 6541 with the Milgauss’s 1956 introduction. Phillips describes references 6543 and 6541 as the original versions that came before the 1019. Together, those sources support a broad progression from the early references to the later 1019, but they do not establish exact launch and end dates for every reference or variant.

Reference 6541 also has a documented high-profile auction result. Phillips reports that one example sold for CHF 2,238,000 at Geneva Watch Auction XVII in May 2023. This is a result for a particular watch, not a typical price or a general valuation for the reference.
Reference 1019
Phillips says the 1019 superseded the original 6543 and 6541. That establishes its place in the reference sequence, but the research available here does not verify exact production years, movement specifications, or the details of its dial and hand variations.

Collectors comparing a 1019 with an earlier Milgauss should distinguish verified reference history from claims about a particular example. The dossier does not establish reference-specific specifications or provenance, so those details require additional specialist documentation.
Reference 116400 and the modern Milgauss
Rolex’s collection history highlights the reference 116400 GV in 2014. The available research does not verify a full technical specification or production timeline for the 116400 family, so exact case, movement, and variant details should not be inferred here.
Bob’s Watches, a dealer, reports that the 116400 and 116400 GV family was discontinued in 2023. This is secondary reporting, not a discontinuation announcement from Rolex. The Rolex history source used for this article highlights a 2014 model but does not itself announce the family’s discontinuation.

What is known—and what still needs sourcing
The available sources support the Milgauss’s purpose, the internal shield, Rolex’s stated 1,000-gauss design target, CERN testing, the broad reference succession, a 2014 116400 GV milestone, and a reported 2023 discontinuation. They do not establish exact production runs, precise date ranges for every reference, complete technical specifications, or a comprehensive buying guide.
Those limits matter to collectors. A reference name alone does not establish the originality, configuration, or provenance of an individual watch. Buyers considering a collectible example should seek additional specialist documentation and independent examination rather than relying on unsupported generalizations.
