The BBC’s CWC connection was not one single “war correspondent watch.” In the late 1970s through the early to mid-1980s, the broadcaster reportedly obtained both wrist-worn CWC chronographs for correspondents timing reports and stopwatches for production staff. Journalist Jeremy Bowen is a documented example of a correspondent who received and used a CWC chronograph. The detailed account comes from Fratello’s January 3, 2024 report, which relies substantially on research and recollections attributed to CWC collector Jonathan Hughes.
Why did the BBC obtain CWC timing watches?
Fratello reports that the BBC approached British watchmaker CWC for timepieces to help with timed reports and production work. Correspondents needed to keep reports to an agreed duration, while editing and control-room staff also had timing tasks. Hughes explains that a clear chronograph could help correspondents time camera segments; his explanation is an attributed account of the practical need, not a published BBC specification.
CWC’s own company history says it was established in 1972 and made military timepieces, including mechanical GS Navigators and pilots’ chronographs. Its chronology lists 1970s W10 general-service watches and RAF pilots’ mechanical asymmetrical chronographs among its early models. That history helps explain CWC’s experience making practical timing instruments, but does not independently document the BBC’s procurement decision. The categories should not be conflated: a stopwatch served production-room timing, while the chronograph was worn and used by a correspondent. Markings alone do not establish that an individual watch was issued to the BBC.

What did the reported BBC correspondent chronographs look like?
Fratello describes reported examples with 39 × 14 mm cases, black dials, tritium numerals, Plexiglass crystals and screw-in case backs. These are characteristics of the examples discussed, not proof that every BBC-associated CWC chronograph shared an identical specification. The account identifies Valjoux 7733 and later 7765 variants, but does not establish a definitive model reference or comprehensive list of serial numbers.
Did Jeremy Bowen wear a CWC chronograph?
Yes. Fratello identifies BBC journalist Jeremy Bowen, now the BBC’s International Editor, as a recipient who continued to wear and use his CWC chronograph while reporting from conflict areas. Bowen described why report duration mattered: “If I do a report on the 10 o’clock news, we negotiate a bit about how long it’s going to be. If you are more than 10 seconds longer than you say you’ll be, then you know it’s not a good thing. It mucks up their timings because the program is the same length. So it just means if someone comes in way over, something else (on the news) has got to go.” The quotation is reproduced in Fratello’s account.

Fratello also recounts Bowen’s anecdote that, after his contractual status with the BBC changed in the 1990s, he was asked to return the wrist stopwatch. He joked that he would bring it in, while implying he did not intend to give it back. This is a personal recollection reported by Fratello, not evidence of a formal BBC return policy.
How many CWC watches did the BBC receive?
There is no verified procurement total in the available account. Hughes estimates that the CWC watches supplied to the BBC “probably only numbered in the tens.” Treat that as a collector’s estimate, not a confirmed production figure or an exact count.

How can you assess a watch claimed to be a BBC-issued CWC?
The reported variants and the limited estimate make provenance important, but the available account does not provide a definitive authentication checklist. For a particular vintage example, request clear photographs of the dial and case back, an identification of the movement, service history and any documented chain of ownership. Compare the physical details with the reported configurations, while remembering that matching features or BBC-related markings alone do not prove BBC issue.

No. CWC’s current catalog includes a Pilots Chronograph range, but a modern related product is not proof that an original BBC-issued watch—or an exact reissue—is currently available. CWC also says its watches use fixed strap bars and offers nylon military-style straps; check compatibility before buying a replacement strap. Current stock and specifications can change, so confirm details with CWC’s current strap listings.
