A “Disco Volante” watch takes its name from the Italian for “flying disc”: it has a smooth, UFO-like outline, typically with a round case and very short or absent lugs. In a September 2024 Fratello article, the round Furlan Marri Disco and the triangular Anoma A1 brought the style into focus. Their comparison leads back to Audemars Piguet’s Model 5093, whose concept the brand’s archive attributes to German designer Gebhard Duve.
What makes a watch a Disco Volante?
“Disco Volante” means “flying disc” in Italian. As a watch description, it evokes a broad, smooth case that seems to float around the wrist rather than extend into conventional projecting lugs. The classic expression is round, but the term is a style label, not a formal technical category: a lugless watch is not automatically a Disco Volante.
Fratello’s September 2024 article uses the label broadly enough to include a triangular watch, the Anoma A1. That makes the design idea clearer: the defining impression is a compact, uninterrupted silhouette, not a strict requirement that every case be circular.
Which modern watches prompted the comparison?
Furlan Marri Disco
The Furlan Marri Disco is the more literal modern interpretation in Fratello’s comparison: a round, lugless case paired with a mesh bracelet. The article discusses Verde, Havana, and Celeste versions. Its shape and bracelet give the watch a continuous, disc-like outline rather than the familiar case-and-lugs profile. Fratello listed CHF 2,500 in September 2024; that is a dated publication figure, not a current price or offer. Fratello’s September 2024 feature does not establish present availability.

Anoma A1
Designed by Matteo Violet-Vianello, the Anoma A1 departs from the circle with a triangular case, but its smooth, lugless form makes it Disco Volante-adjacent in Fratello’s reading. The article reported that the first run had sold out and cited £1,300 at the time of publication. Neither the stock observation nor the price should be treated as current without checking the maker or a retailer.
Who designed the Audemars Piguet 5093 Discovolante?
Audemars Piguet’s own historical account credits German designer Gebhard Duve (1899–1977) with the concept behind Model 5093. Duve proposed his drawings to Jacques Louis Audemars in 1952; one sketch led to the watch later nicknamed “discovolante.” This archival attribution is more precise than assigning the 5093’s original concept to Gérald Genta. Fratello notes that Genta revised the design in a later context, but AP’s account identifies Duve as the source of the original 5093 concept. Audemars Piguet’s AP Chronicles history describes a 1959 example as a 35 mm, 18-carat yellow-gold watch with a two-tone dial and Clous de Paris bezel; it also identifies Calibre 2003 and movement 71245.

How do the modern watches relate to vintage examples?
The appeal is less a one-to-one reissue story than a shared design language: cases that minimize the visual break between the dial and the wrist, with the bezel and case outline doing much of the expressive work. AP’s 5093 is a documented historical reference point, while the modern Furlan Marri and Anoma examples show how the idea can be interpreted through different shapes and materials.
Fratello also pointed readers toward vintage examples from Longines, Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. Among the specific leads it mentioned were a 42 mm Longines Admiral with caliber 431, Omega De Ville options, and AP watches with differing references. These are starting points for model-specific investigation, not a complete catalogue or a current buying list.
