How Monsieur de Chanel began

Calibre 1 departed from a conventional three-hand display. The hour appears in a window at six o’clock, while the minute hand traces a 240-degree arc and snaps back to begin another sweep. A small-seconds display completes the time indication. The effect is both a mechanical complication and the watch’s defining design feature: the time is read through separate, visually distinct indications rather than a familiar central hand arrangement.
What Calibre 1 and the original watch offer
Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists Calibre 1 as a manually wound movement with a 72-hour power reserve. Its specification entry gives the movement a diameter of 32 mm and thickness of 5.5 mm, with 170 components and 30 jewels. The same entry describes a 40 mm round case, 10.4 mm thick, with 30 m water resistance. Phillips identifies the original H4800 as a 2016 launch limited to 300 watches: 150 in beige gold and 150 in white gold. How the line changed with the flying tourbillon
A later Haute Horlogerie expression shifts the emphasis from Calibre 1’s jumping-hour and retrograde-minute display to a flying tourbillon. Chanel’s collection description identifies a platinum Monsieur de Chanel with Manufacture Calibre 5.1 and a three-dimensional lion’s head that rotates with the seconds. The contrast is more than a change in materials. Calibre 1 organizes time around a jumping hour and a returning minute hand; the later model makes the flying tourbillon and sculptural seconds display its centerpiece. The available documentation supports these as distinct milestones, but not a full sequence of intervening references or launch dates.
Gender framing and the watch’s design
At launch, Monsieur de Chanel was presented and discussed as a men’s watch. In his 2016 Hodinkee article, Jack Forster questioned whether its design needed to be restricted to a male audience. That is the author’s interpretation, not an official Chanel position. “Men’s” describes the launch-era framing; it is not a technical property of the movement or a rule about who can wear the watch.
