The Evolution of Wristwatch Sizes: From Pocket Watches to Oversized Icons

Wristwatch sizing shifted with use and fashion, from large pocket-watch cases to military designs and watches described as oversized for their era.

Wristwatch sizes changed as timepieces moved from pockets to wrists, military use broadened their appeal, and designers began treating case size as part of a watch’s identity. A pocket watch from 1682–83 measured 5.2 cm across its outer case, while the 39 mm Royal Oak was described as oversized when it launched in 1972. Those examples show how context changes the meaning of a measurement—not a universal rule for what every watch should measure.

Before wristwatches, personal watches were carried in pockets

Pocket watches were an established personal-watch format centuries before wristwatches became commonplace. The Metropolitan Museum of Art records a pair-case watch made by Thomas Tompion and case maker Nathanial Delander I in 1682–83 with an outer case diameter of 5.2 cm and an inner case diameter of 4.4 cm (The Met object record). These are measurements of the two nested cases of one pocket watch, not a like-for-like comparison with a later wristwatch case.

Wrist-worn timepieces existed long before the twentieth century, but their existence did not mean they were already the everyday norm. The Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb reports archival records reaching back to the sixteenth century and says Girard-Perregaux made 2,000 watches in 1880 for Emperor Wilhelm II’s naval officers, in a feature hosted by Google Arts & Culture.

War helped move watches from pockets to wrists

Wristwatches became more practical and more widely adopted around the period of World War I. Seiko Museum Ginza credits wartime developments with influencing the functions and designs of later wristwatches, which gradually became popular among civilians after the war. The museum identifies the 1913 Seiko Laurel as Japan’s first wristwatch; Seiko adapted the movement and exterior of its small Laurel pocket watch in developing it, then planned full-scale mass production from 1924 (Seiko Museum Ginza).

In Seiko’s account, wristwatch production exceeded pocket-watch production in Japan and worldwide by the 1930s, and the wristwatch had become mainstream by the middle of that decade. That is the museum’s historical summary, rather than a production series with figures for every country or year.

How reported wristwatch sizes changed

One historical summary from Audemars Piguet describes a gradual increase in men’s wristwatch diameters: watches in the 1920s were “almost always” under 30 mm; examples above 32 mm appeared in the second half of the 1930s; and models above 35 mm began to make their mark in the 1950s (Audemars Piguet’s history of Royal Oak sizing).

Those figures offer useful period context, but they are reported conventions, not an industry-wide census or a precise average for every watch. They do not establish a single normal size across regions, makers, styles or intended uses.

Military and professional watches followed their own needs

A size that looks small beside a modern watch could still be substantial for its period or purpose. The National WWII Museum describes U.S. Army wristwatches from World War II as small compared with later watches and gives their case sizes as 35–38 mm (The National WWII Museum’s account). That range belongs to the U.S. watches in that account; it should not be generalized to every nation’s service watch or to civilian models of the era.

Bracelet Sizer Watch Mandrel Oval (Aspect Ratio of Human Wrist)
  • Shaped in an oval following the aspect ratio of the human wrist, it provides a more accurate measurement for wrist accessories such as oval bangles and watches.
  • Made from sturdy PLA plastic. Stepped design provides quick and accurate measurement vs conical designs. DOES NOT DAMAGE JEWELRY unlike metal sizers. Much better than folding plastic sheet mandrels that keep disintegrating!
  • Manufactured in the USA
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Mandrels provide accurate measurements when measuring objects that are meant to be circular such as bracelets or necklaces. For these items, do not use straight rulers as they do not factor in the inner circumference of an object and will give longer, deceptively false measurements. Avoid upset customers and measure with a mandrel!

Purpose matters alongside the decade. Service watches were shaped by practical use, while a later luxury design could make size a visible part of its character. The same diameter can therefore carry a different meaning depending on the watch’s design and context.

When 39 mm was called oversized

Audemars Piguet says the first Royal Oak, introduced in 1972 with a 39 mm diameter, was considered oversized for its time. The example shows that “large” is historically relative: it describes how that particular design was viewed in its period, not how every wearer regarded every 39 mm watch.

How to compare vintage and modern watch sizes

If you are considering a vintage watch, do not judge its fit or historical typicality from diameter alone. Compare the period, watch type, intended use and the specific dimension being reported. The historical examples above mix pocket-watch case measurements, reported wristwatch diameters and U.S. military watch case sizes; those measurements do not form one standardized series.

  • Check what the number measures. The Met’s 5.2 cm and 4.4 cm figures describe the outer and inner cases of a pocket watch, respectively.
  • Keep the use case in view. A military watch, dress watch and civilian accessory may reflect different priorities even when their diameters are similar.
  • Treat historical ranges as context, not rules. The published size chronology is a manufacturer’s summary, while the WWII dimensions refer to the U.S. Army watches in one museum account.
  • Separate history from personal fit. A period convention cannot determine whether a watch will suit a particular wrist or wearer.

The sources available here do not provide a comprehensive, consistent database of case diameters by decade, region and style. The examples are best read as signposts in the shift from pocket watches to a wide variety of wristwatches—not as a universal sizing standard.
