The Casio G-SHOCK Origin began with the 1983 DW-5000C, built around a simple ambition: create a watch that would survive being dropped. Its continuing square design has since appeared in standard digital, solar-powered, oversized and full-steel forms. Here’s how that lineage developed—and what its core shock-protection idea actually was.
What does “G-SHOCK Origin” mean?
“Origin” refers here to the square G-SHOCK lineage rooted in the DW-5000C and carried forward through the 5000 and 5600 families. The phrase is also the framing of Lex Stolk’s October 6, 2021 Fratello feature, The G-Heritage Story — Evolution Of The Casio G-Shock Origin. It is a written editorial article, not a documentary or video.
The 1983 DW-5000C was the first G-SHOCK, according to Casio’s official G-SHOCK history. Its lasting visual signature is the square case and digital display, a form Casio connects to the shock-resistant structure developed for that first watch.
Why did Casio develop the first G-SHOCK?
Casio attributes the concept to Kikuo Ibe, who proposed “A durable watch that would not break even if dropped.” The challenge was not simply to make the case tougher: the watch’s internal module also needed protection from impact.

- Shock-Resistant Structure – Built to withstand extreme conditions, making it ideal for sports, military, and rugged outdoor use.
Casio’s account describes an early approach that attempted to cushion the whole watch, but drop tests were unsuccessful. The breakthrough was to protect the central module within a hollow, cushioned structure, allowing it to sit inside the case as if floating. This arrangement helped absorb shocks rather than transferring them directly to the module, and Casio presents it as the foundation of the continuing 5000/5600 design.
How long did the original development take?
Casio says Project Team Tough was formed in 1981 and developed the watch for about two years, making over 200 prototypes before arriving at the shock-resistant structure. Casio’s official G-SHOCK origin booklet describes more than two years of development and over 200 prototypes. These are Casio’s reported historical figures, not an independently verified prototype count.

Casio dates the DW-5000C’s debut to 1983. The sequence—from the team’s formation to the first watch—places the development effort in the early 1980s, though Casio describes its duration slightly differently across its history page and booklet.
Which later watches show the square Origin’s evolution?
Stolk’s 2021 Fratello feature traces several later references. They illustrate different interpretations of the square design, rather than a complete model-by-model history.

| Model | Milestone described in the 2021 article | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| DW-5600C | Released in 1987 | A later step in the classic square line. |
| DW-5600E | Released in 1996 | A subsequent standard square-family reference. |
| G-5600E | Released in 2009 | A solar-powered version of the square design. |
| GMW-B5000D | Full-steel interpretation introduced in 2018 | The familiar Origin form rendered in metal. |
| DW-5600BB | Discussed as a blacked-out variant | A subdued, all-black presentation of the square. |
| GX-56BB | Discussed as an enlarged interpretation | A larger-format take on the familiar shape. |
The release years and model descriptions in this table are those given in the October 6, 2021 Fratello article, not current availability or specification claims. In particular, a 2021 description of a reference does not establish that it remains on sale today.
What stayed consistent as the design changed?
The lineage’s continuity is structural as well as visual. Casio’s account identifies the protected central module and cushioned, hollow construction as the solution behind the first G-SHOCK, while the square silhouette became the recognizable outward expression of that idea. Later examples alter the presentation—such as the GMW-B5000D’s steel exterior, the DW-5600BB’s blacked-out look or the GX-56BB’s larger scale—without ceasing to read as members of the square family.

The 2021 feature also points to a solar-powered member, the G-5600E. That is a documented attribute of that named example in the article; it should not be assumed to describe every Origin or 5600-family watch.

The 2021 feature is useful as a historical and editorial tour of the square Origin, with dated milestones and selected examples. It is not a current buying guide: its prices and availability are historical, and it does not establish present-day stock or current specifications. For those details, consult the official page for the exact reference and market before making a purchase decision.

Likewise, the first DW-5000C and a modern DW-5600 should not be treated as the same watch. A current DW-5600 is a modern member or descendant of the 5000/5600 lineage, not the original 1983 reference.
