The Graham Chronofighter’s Unique Trigger Explained

The Graham Chronofighter uses a thumb-operated lever on the left side of the case to control its chronograph. Here is Graham’s explanation of the design and its history.

The Graham Chronofighter’s distinctive trigger is a thumb-operated lever on the left side of the case. It starts and stops the chronograph, while a separate control can reset it. Graham says the layout is intended to make timing intuitive and keep case protrusions away from the wrist when the watch is worn on the left arm; those are the brand’s design claims, not independently measured gains in speed, accuracy or comfort.

What is the trigger on a Graham Chronofighter?

It is a prominent lever mounted on the left flank of the watch case. Unlike a conventional chronograph’s small pushers, which are commonly arranged beside the crown, this lever is designed to be operated with the thumb. Graham describes it as the control for chronograph functions and says it facilitates quick operation. Graham’s Chronofighter Vintage product description calls it “highly intuitive to use.”

The lever is part of the watch’s chronograph controls, not a separate safety catch or a decorative feature. The exact sequence and function of the other controls can vary by model, so consult the instructions for the particular reference rather than assuming every Chronofighter operates identically.

Why did Graham put the controls on the left?

Graham gives two related reasons: the thumb-operated lever is meant to make chronograph operation quick and intuitive, and putting the crown and trigger on the left can keep protruding controls from pressing against the wrist or restricting movement when a watch is worn on the left arm. The company says the layout can prevent right-side case protrusions from gouging or chafing the wrist. These are Graham’s stated design intentions; the available sources do not establish a comparative test showing that the trigger is faster, more accurate or more comfortable than other chronograph controls.

Graham’s explanation also emphasizes the operating finger: “The thumb is the fastest finger of the hand, rather than the index finger traditionally used on chronographs.” The brand gives this statement in its history, without naming an individual speaker. It should be read as Graham’s rationale for the design, not as an independently verified performance finding.

How the trigger fits the Chronofighter’s history

Graham dates the first Chronofighter model to 2001. In the brand’s account, the lever followed earlier chronograph work, including a split-seconds chronograph with a foudroyante hand introduced in 1998 and described as measuring to one-eighth of a second. Graham says it then considered the variation that can arise from a person’s reaction time when manually starting and stopping a chronograph, citing a range of 0.5 to 2 seconds. The page does not specify when that estimate was made, and it is Graham’s historical account rather than independent evidence. Graham’s Chronofighter history also frames the design in the context of military aviation timepieces and the chronograph system it attributes to George Graham in 1710.

What the trigger does—and does not—tell you

  • It identifies the operating layout: a thumb-operated lever sits on the left side of the case.
  • It reflects Graham’s design rationale: the brand says the lever supports quick, intuitive operation and that the left-side arrangement helps avoid wrist interference on a left-worn watch.
  • It does not prove superior timing: the cited sources provide no independent comparison of speed, accuracy or comfort against conventional chronograph pushers.
  • It is not necessarily identical across every reference: the Chronofighter Vintage collection includes multiple variants; check the specific model’s description and instructions for its controls.

For current examples, Graham’s Chronofighter Vintage collection lists multiple variants. One listed blue model is reference 2CVAS.U21A. Availability and pricing can change, so the official listing is the appropriate place to confirm current details.
