The Hamilton Ventura’s Hollywood story has two defining chapters: Elvis Presley wore one in Blue Hawaii (1961), and the watch became part of the on-screen uniform in Men in Black, beginning with the 1997 film. The story starts earlier, with Hamilton’s 1957 launch of Richard Arbib’s striking electric-watch design.
How the Ventura began
Hamilton dates the Ventura’s introduction to 1957 and credits American industrial designer Richard Arbib with its design. The brand says it gave Arbib unusual creative freedom. The result was an asymmetric, triangular case that stood apart from the more conventional watch shapes of its time. Hamilton’s history of the brand presents the design as a deliberate break from tradition.
Hamilton calls the Ventura the world’s first electric watch. In the company’s account, an electromagnetic coil powered it, making the watch a technological bridge between mechanical watches and the quartz movement that emerged in the 1960s. Both the “first” claim and that framing of its place in watchmaking history are Hamilton’s.
Elvis Presley and Blue Hawaii (1961)
Four years after the Ventura’s launch, Hamilton says Elvis Presley wore one in the musical comedy Blue Hawaii. The 1961 appearance is the watch’s earliest prominent Hollywood association and the screen moment most closely linked to Presley. Hamilton’s history and cinema pages identify the watch, but the available material does not specify the exact Ventura reference or establish a reference number for Presley’s film watch.

The Ventura in Men in Black
The 1997 film and Agents J and K
Hamilton says Agents J and K, played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, wore the Ventura in the first Men in Black film. Hamilton’s official cinema page states: “Both Agent J and Agent K, portrayed by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, sported the Ventura in the inaugural 1997 film.” Swatch Group likewise described the Ventura in a 2019 announcement as part of the franchise’s uniform since 1997.
Later films and Agent M
Hamilton says the Ventura appeared across the franchise’s four sequels and identifies one on Agent M, played by Tessa Thompson, in Men in Black: International (2019). Swatch Group described that film’s version as having a stainless-steel case, black dial and black leather strap. These descriptions establish the film association, not the exact retail reference number or identity of every prop used across the series.

What the screen association means for today’s Ventura
Hamilton currently presents Ventura Quartz as part of its collection and calls the Ventura the official watch of the Men in Black film series. That is Hamilton’s current product and marketing description; it does not establish that a particular watch now sold is identical to the prop worn by Elvis or to the watches used in any of the films. The sources also do not identify the precise Blue Hawaii model.
Hamilton says its watches have appeared in more than 500 movies and television shows, but its history pages do not explain how that figure was counted or provide an independent audit. The company also describes its cinema history as more than 90 years, citing a first screen appearance in Shanghai Express (1932). Those are Hamilton’s own figures and account of its screen history.
