Journe Centigraphe Souverain makes a credible case for being one of the most inventive chronographs: it combines a rocker control built into the case, three elapsed-time scales and a chronograph mechanism that F.P. Journe says is isolated from timekeeping. Its unusual display rewards careful reading, though it is less immediately familiar than a conventional chronograph. The hands-on perspective cited here concerns the Boutique Edition; the technical specifications below are the manufacturer’s published figures for its listed platinum configuration unless another version is named.
How does the Centigraphe measure hundredths of a second?
The hand-wound Calibre 1506 displays elapsed time on three counters, each designed for a different interval. Rather than reading it like a standard minutes-and-seconds chronograph, identify which hand is moving and follow that counter’s scale.
| Counter | Location | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| One-second counter | 10 o’clock | The fast chronograph indication, with a one-hundredth-of-a-second readout |
| 20-second counter | 2 o’clock | Elapsed time on a 20-second scale |
| 10-minute counter | 6 o’clock | Elapsed time on a 10-minute scale |
F.P. Journe lists red time graduations and black tachometer graduations. The tachometer is intended to calculate speed from the time taken to cover one kilometre; the product page gives a range of 6 to 36,000 km/h. That extraordinary span describes the scale’s design, not a certification for measuring real-world speed. The central hands show hours and minutes.
F.P. Journe says the 1/100-second, 20-second and 10-minute hands are driven by two different wheel trains. The layout is technically ambitious, but its practical trade-off is clear: readers must learn three scales and distinguish their different rates instead of relying on a familiar central seconds hand and minute register. Monochrome Watches’ hands-on article on the Boutique Edition likewise describes the layout as unusual and discusses its tachymeter scale; those observations should not be assumed to describe every version.

What does the rocker at 2 o’clock do?
A rocker arm integrated into the case band at 2 o’clock operates the chronograph’s start, stop and reset functions. It replaces the more familiar pair of pushers positioned above and below the crown. The control’s placement is a defining part of the watch’s character: it offers a different operating sequence, but a wearer accustomed to conventional chronograph pushers will need to adapt.
F.P. Journe describes the movement as using separate wheel trains driven from the centre of the mainspring. The manufacturer says chronograph operation is isolated from timekeeping and that the balance amplitude remains unaffected while the chronograph runs. Those are the maker’s technical claims, not findings from an independent test.

Does running the chronograph affect its autonomy?
F.P. Journe publishes 80 ± 2 hours of autonomy with the chronograph stopped and 24 ± 2 hours with it running. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. The difference matters if the chronograph is left active: its running state is associated with substantially less stated autonomy than the stopped state.
What are the Calibre 1506 specifications?
F.P. Journe’s product specifications identify the Calibre 1506 as a hand-wound movement in 18K rose gold, with 50 jewels and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz). The listed elapsed-time range is from one hundredth of a second to 10 minutes.

For the specific platinum case-and-bracelet configuration on the standard product page, F.P. Journe lists a 40 mm diameter and 10.1 mm overall height. That page describes a white-gold and whitened guilloché silver dial, with blued and red-lacquered steel hands. These case, bracelet and dial details belong to that listed configuration, not necessarily to every Centigraphe Souverain. The separate Centigraphe Souverain F product page identifies a boutique-request version, underscoring the need to distinguish variants.

Why did Journe design it this way?
François-Paul Journe’s account traces the concept to discussions with Jean Todt about an ideal chronograph for motor racing. Journe says the idea of three hands rotating at different speeds became a starting point, followed by work on pusher design, movement power balance and energy loss. This is his account of the development, rather than independently corroborated history.

Journe wrote: “I met Jean Todt through the ICM Foundation, and during the course of our meetings we discussed the ideal chronograph for the world of car racing.” He also said: “I followed up with research on chronograph pushers, on questions of the balance of power in the movement, requirements, and energy loss, and I made use of a patent registered for the Sonnerie Souveraine.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the cleverest chronograph?
“Cleverest” is a matter of what a wearer values. The Centigraphe Souverain stands out for its integrated rocker, three differently scaled elapsed-time displays and the maker’s stated separation of chronograph operation from timekeeping. It is less straightforward to read at a glance than a conventional chronograph, and its published autonomy is lower with the chronograph running. Whether the design is cleverer than a more familiar layout depends on whether mechanical ingenuity or instant legibility matters more to you.
