The F.P. Journe Vagabondage III is the final watch in the Vagabondage trilogy, distinguished by a mechanical seconds display that jumps forward once each second. Its smoked sapphire dial combines digital hour and seconds windows with an analog central minute hand and a separate power-reserve indicator. “Digital” describes the numeral-style display—not an electronic movement.
What makes the Vagabondage III distinctive?
Vagabondage III pairs an unusual display with a mechanical movement. The hours appear digitally at 10 o’clock, while a second digital window at 6 o’clock shows the seconds. A central white hand indicates minutes, and a blued-steel hand at 1 o’clock indicates the remaining power reserve. F.P. Journe describes the hours and seconds as visible through a smoked sapphire dial. F.P. Journe’s model page identifies it as the third edition and says it retains the flat Tortue case used for Vagabondage II.
The seconds do not sweep continuously around the dial. They advance in discrete one-second jumps, giving the display its distinctive digital character while remaining entirely mechanical.
How does the jumping-seconds mechanism work?
Inside is manually wound calibre 1514. F.P. Journe says its remontoir d’égalité advances the time train each second and identifies the device as a patented one-second constant-force mechanism. In practical terms, the mechanism releases the display in regular one-second steps rather than letting the seconds indication move continuously.

Phillips’ catalogue essay explains that the remontoir helps the balance wheel maintain constant amplitude under the energy demand of the jumping seconds. That is the auction house’s description of the mechanism, not an independent test. Phillips’ New York Watch Auction X catalogue provides that explanation.

How Vagabondage III completed the trilogy
The series began with three experimental digital-display watches designed by François-Paul Journe in 2004 for Antiquorum’s 30th anniversary. They had flat Tortue cases and were sold as one-off pieces at a charity auction benefiting ICM. F.P. Journe later developed the concept into the successive limited editions Vagabondage I, II and III, with the third watch completing the trilogy. The maker recounts that origin in its January 2017 Annual Salon announcement.
How many Vagabondage III watches were made?
F.P. Journe’s January 2017 announcement gives edition counts of 69 platinum watches and 68 watches in 18K 6N gold. Its technical page describes a 147-piece series for the specific calibre and separately mentions a 10-piece platinum jewellery version. Those categories should not be merged into one unqualified production total: the maker presents the jewellery version separately from the 147-piece calibre series.

The manufacturer states that production ran from 2016 through 2019. That is a completed production run, not a statement about present-day availability.
What have Vagabondage III watches sold for at auction?
Two Phillips records illustrate individual historical sales; neither establishes a current market price or a trend.

The New York catalogue labels its example “circa 2007,” which conflicts with F.P. Journe’s stated 2016–2019 production window. The catalogue date should therefore be treated as a discrepancy, not as a verified manufacture date. The records also concern different watches and sales; condition, completeness, documentation, currency, date and auction venue all matter when comparing results.

The cited records establish historical auction outcomes, not current listings, asking prices or a general valuation. They also do not provide an independent authentication protocol. A buyer assessing a particular watch would need to consider the specific metal and variant, its condition, documentation and accessories, and the details of the individual sale rather than treating either result as a price benchmark.
