It is not the same watch as a modern TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 or Gulf edition, even though those models draw on the original’s history.
Which Heuer Monaco did Steve McQueen wear?
TAG Heuer identifies McQueen’s watch in Le Mans as the Heuer Monaco reference 1133B. The reference is the clearest way to distinguish the vintage film-associated watch from later Monaco re-editions and current models. TAG Heuer’s vintage Monaco history describes the 1133B’s square stainless-steel case, blue dial and left-side crown.
The original Monaco Chronomatic paired that design with the Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement. TAG Heuer dates its debut to March 3, 1969. The left-hand crown became a visual signature as well as a practical cue that the automatic watch did not need daily winding.
Why the watch’s left-side crown stands out
The crown sits opposite the conventional position on most chronographs. Jack Heuer explained that the company initially thought it looked unusual, then chose to make it distinctive: “By having the crown on the left we would in effect be saying: ‘This chronograph does not need winding every day because it is automatic.’” TAG Heuer reproduces the explanation in its Monaco history.

Its combination of a square case, blue dial and left-side crown set it apart from more conventional racing chronographs of the period.
How McQueen’s Monaco became part of Le Mans
McQueen wore the Monaco as Michael Delaney, his racing-driver character. TAG Heuer says he selected it alongside a Heuer-marked racing suit associated with his friend Jo Siffert, connecting the watch’s racing identity to the film’s setting. The brand recounts the film connection in its vintage history and its auction-history article.

There is an important distinction between the model and an individual screen-used watch. TAG Heuer says six reference 1133B watches were sent to the production and cautions that it can be difficult to identify exactly which set watch appears in every shot. A surviving watch’s connection to the film therefore depends on its own documented provenance; the reference alone does not prove that a specific example was worn on screen.
Vintage 1133B versus today’s TAG Heuer Monaco
Current Monaco Calibre 11 and Monaco x Gulf watches are modern products that pay tribute to the original and to Le Mans. They are not vintage 1133B watches. TAG Heuer’s current Monaco collection presents the Calibre 11 as a contemporary model using a movement introduced in 1969, and describes the Gulf edition as a tribute to the film.

For vintage authenticity
A 1133B offers the historical reference and design associated with the film. For a particular watch, assess its condition, originality of parts and documented provenance rather than relying on the reference number or a seller’s screen-used claim alone. Collectible vintage watches also call for careful consideration of servicing and access to appropriate parts.

For a current Monaco
A modern Calibre 11 or Gulf edition offers a present-day product with a documented manufacturer listing and current service channels. Compare the exact model’s movement, case material and dimensions, dial and strap configuration, and edition status. Product availability changes by region, so check the relevant TAG Heuer page rather than assuming a model is currently offered everywhere.
TAG Heuer’s official pages establish the brand’s historical account and current collection context; they do not establish independent performance testing, current prices or the provenance of every individual vintage watch.
