The Breitling Emergency began with an unusual ambition: put a distress transmitter inside a wristwatch. The first generation transmitted on the aviation distress frequency of 121.5 MHz; the 2013 Emergency II added a 406 MHz alert signal. Breitling’s own timeline records both an early 1988 launch and a defining 1995 announcement, milestones that describe different stages of the watch’s development.
How the Emergency began
Breitling traces the idea to Ernest Schneider, a pilot and communications engineer who took on the challenge of combining a reliable wristwatch with a wearable emergency transmitter. The company’s 140-year history recounts a conversation with a NATO officer as the inspiration, but frames that origin story as legend rather than a verified meeting.
According to Breitling, development took nearly 10 years, involved at least two failed prototypes and cost $7 million. Those are the manufacturer’s reported figures. The engineering challenge was not simply to fit a radio into a watch: the design also needed an antenna that could be deployed by the wearer when needed.
Why Breitling gives both 1988 and 1995 as milestones
Breitling’s anniversary account says the Emergency was announced to the press in 1995. Its broader heritage timeline also records an initial launch in 1988, describing that version as having one antenna. The 1995 milestone marks the patented antenna-deployment system that defined the better-known first-generation design. Thus, the dates refer to different points in the brand’s chronology, not a single unambiguous debut date. Breitling’s anniversary history and heritage timeline provide the company’s accounts.

- Breitling Avenger Chronograph Automatic Blue Dial Men's Watch A13317101C1X1
Breitling says Swiss communications authorities approved the watch for sale in May 1996, followed by approvals in Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom. The company’s history says lawyers were still seeking U.S. authorization in July 1999 and that the FCC granted permission to sell in the United States in 2000. These are historical milestones reported by Breitling, not guidance on present-day beacon rules.
The original Breitling Emergency: a transmitter on 121.5 MHz
The first-generation Emergency paired a 43 mm titanium case with a micro-transmitter on 121.5 MHz, the aviation distress frequency cited by Breitling. Its antenna system was intended to be extended by the wearer in an emergency. The design’s defining idea was a personal, wrist-worn transmitter—not a replacement for the safety equipment required aboard an aircraft or vessel.

Breitling’s heritage timeline gives conditional estimates for how far the signal might be detected: up to 400 km in its mountain/high-altitude example, and 36 km to 160 km in flat-terrain or ship examples tied to aircraft altitude. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed coverage. The company notes that terrain, the watch’s position and the height of a searching aircraft affect practical range.
Rescue and flight episodes in Breitling’s history
The Mata-Rangi rescue, 1997
Breitling says the Emergency helped save the 13 crew members of the reed vessel Mata-Rangi after a storm swept it off course. The company’s account says the vessel was later found about 1,800 miles from the Chilean coast. Those details are Breitling’s reported rescue narrative; the operational account is not independently corroborated here.

Breitling Orbiter 3, 1999
Breitling says Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones wore Emergency watches during the first nonstop balloon circumnavigation, completed in March 1999. The episode placed the watch in an aviation-adjacent setting, though it does not establish that the watch’s transmitter was used during the flight.
Emergency II: the 2013 dual-frequency successor
Breitling dates the Emergency II to 2013. The manufacturer describes it as transmitting on both 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz: 406 MHz sends an alert with more information, while 121.5 MHz supports locating or homing. The successor’s case is 51 mm according to Breitling’s heritage timeline.
