In Rob Nudds’s 2021 Fratello Watches poll, the choices were 3, 4:30, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. Nudds preferred six; which one would get your vote?
What the poll is asking
“How do you take your date?” is a design question as much as a practical one. A date display occupies part of the dial, and moving it changes how the hour markers, hands and other elements relate to one another. Nudds’s piece is an invitation to choose a favorite, not a test that establishes one layout as superior.
The positions below reflect the arguments and personal judgments in Nudds’s June 20, 2021 article. Its page showed 41 comments, but no poll tally is reported; the comment count is not evidence of which option readers preferred.
How each date-window position makes its case
3 o’clock: the familiar choice
Nudds presents three o’clock as a historically common and familiar arrangement. He argues that it can be accessible to right-handed wearers, potentially visible below a shirt cuff. His article attributes the layout’s popularity to Rolex’s 1945 Datejust and says a Cyclops magnifier was added in 1953; those historical details are the article’s account.

4:30: discreet, but design-sensitive
A window at 4:30 can leave the hour markers unobstructed. Nudds says it can also feel discreet when its color and placement are coordinated with the dial, though he acknowledges that the result can look awkward. He singles out green-dialed Zenith and Laventure examples as integrations he likes.
6 o’clock: symmetry and room for the date
Six is Nudds’s favorite. He sees a date at the bottom of the dial as a way to create vertical symmetry, and says it can work naturally with the arrangement of luminous markers. He also argues that the position can accommodate taller date numerals than a window at three. He notes NOMOS’s use of the layout and acknowledges his own connection to the brand as a source of bias. These are design opinions, not measured findings about legibility.

As Nudds puts it: “Give me the six o’clock date any day and I’ll be a happy man.”
9 o’clock: a reversed perspective
Nudds suggests that nine o’clock may suit a left-handed wearer. He also likes that it reverses the expected horizontal arrangement of dial elements, and observes that the date can be the first detail his eyes land on when he glances at a watch.

12 o’clock: balanced, but unconventional
Nudds sees some of the proportional advantages of six at twelve o’clock, but considers the result visually topsy-turvy. He also argues that this position is a poor fit for tool watches where the nighttime appearance matters. That is his aesthetic judgment, not a universal rule.

Think about what you want the date to do on the dial, rather than treating one position as a standard everyone should follow. Three offers familiarity; six appeals if you value vertical balance and a taller numeral display; 4:30 may preserve the hour markers if the design integrates it well. Nine and twelve make more deliberate visual statements, with nine reversing the usual layout and twelve placing the display at the top.

Ultimately, the best answer is the one that feels coherent on the particular watch. The poll’s five options are starting points for a preference, not a ranking backed by a reported vote count.
