#TBT: Two Seiko Pulsemeter Digital Chronographs Compared

The 1982 Seiko S229-5001 and later S234-5010 pair digital chronographs with pulse-reading features. Here are their design differences, the S234’s running-kit story, the Aliens-associated 501A, and what to verify on a vintage example.

The Seiko S229-5001 and S234-5010 are 1980s digital chronographs with built-in pulse-reading features, but they differ in design and in the story of how they were equipped. The S229 is the earlier, rounder model, cataloged in 1982; the later S234 adds the Pacesetter feature and is associated with a running kit. A related S234-501A is reported to have appeared in Aliens. These are vintage watches, not modern medical devices, and any surviving example needs to be assessed on its own condition and function.

How the Seiko S229 and S234 differ

The S229-5001 appears in a 1982 Seiko catalog, while the S234 followed in 1984, according to watch writer Tomas Rosputinsky’s comparison at Fratello. The S229 is the earlier reference; the S234 is the later design.

Catalog timeline Shown in a 1982 Seiko catalog. Followed in 1984, according to Rosputinsky’s comparison at Fratello.
Case styling Rosputinsky characterizes it as having gentler, rounder corners and a simpler appearance. Rosputinsky describes it as more sculpted, with sharper edges.
Additional feature and equipment No Pacesetter feature is identified in the cited account. Rosputinsky says it has Pacesetter and was associated with a running kit.

The shape descriptions are the author’s design judgments, not a technical specification. The available documentation does not establish a comprehensive module-by-module comparison, water-resistance rating, battery type or life for each reference, or current serviceability.

What the pulse feature did

Rosputinsky describes a contact-based operation: the metal case back rests against the wearer’s skin while a fingertip from the other hand touches the pulse sensor. He cautions against letting other fingers touch the wrist or hand wearing the watch. This is a description of a vintage watch feature, not clinical guidance or evidence of medical accuracy. The S234’s Pacesetter story also involves optional running equipment. The kit described by Rosputinsky comprised a chest band, shoulder strap, electrodes, case holder and connecting wires. Plus9Time’s account of three 1983 Seiko Sports brochures separately identifies a Pulsemeter with an integrated heart-rate sensor and lists DEM015 as a Pulsemeter, alongside DEM010 and DEM012 variants; these catalog designations should not be treated as interchangeable with case references without further documentation: Plus9Time’s brochure account.

Rosputinsky reports that the sensor on his S229 later behaved strangely, apparently sticking, while his S234 gave consistent readings when he followed the manual. That is one owner’s account, not a controlled test or a reliability rate for either model.

Which Seiko Pulsemeter appeared in Aliens?

Rosputinsky identifies the film-associated watch in Aliens (1986) as the S234-501A, worn by the marines. He says it is otherwise essentially like the S234-5010, but has black pulse and side buttons instead of yellow ones. His article notes that the 501A did not appear in the 1984 and 1985 catalogs he checked, while citing a watch-forum post as evidence that it was offered by November 1984. This availability detail is the article’s account; the cited material does not establish an official Seiko release record or a film-prop inventory. See Fratello’s comparison.

Catalog and auction figures: what they do—and do not—tell you

A reproduced 1982 Seiko catalog page shows three S229 color combinations and lists the line at 11,500 yen. That is the historical catalog price, not a current valuation; see the reproduction at WatchHunter.

Sotheby’s cataloged one red S229-5001 as a circa-1982 digital quartz chronograph in 2023. Its catalog gave that example dimensions of 41.5 × 41.5 mm and an estimate of 300–500 GBP. The estimate is not proof of a realized sale price or a current market value: Sotheby’s lot record.

What to check on a vintage example

A model name in a listing does not prove that a watch is authentic, complete or operational. Assess the specific watch and any included equipment before comparing asking prices.

  • Reference and suffix: Ask for a clear view of the case back and any module or reference markings; distinguish an S234-5010 from a claimed S234-501A rather than relying on the listing title.
  • Controls and variant: Check whether button colors match the claimed version—black for the 501A versus yellow for the 5010, according to Rosputinsky’s comparison.
  • Basic operation: Ask for a demonstration of the LCD and buttons working, and for a separate demonstration of the pulse sensor responding. A demonstration establishes only what that particular example does at that time.
  • Running equipment: Confirm exactly which pieces are included. The running-kit account names a chest band, shoulder strap, electrodes, case holder and connecting wires; do not assume a watch comes with them.
  • Evidence in the listing: Request photographs of the case back and markings, plus a clear functional demonstration. Compare condition and completeness alongside reference, case shape and controls.

The sources document model distinctions and individual examples, not current market pricing, stock, or the operating condition of watches now offered for sale. A collection reference at the Technical Museum in Brno independently identifies a Seiko Pulsemeter Alarm Chrono with a 229A movement and places the S229-5001 in the 1982 catalog: Technical Museum in Brno.
