The blue-dial Seiko 6139-6002 is part of the 6139 automatic-chronograph family associated with astronaut William Pogue, but it is not the specific yellow-dial watch collectors identify as his flight watch. Pogue’s reported watch is a yellow-dial 6139-6005. The blue 6002 is a distinct collectible reference, and its nickname should not be mistaken for proof of the exact watch he carried.
What is the Seiko 6139-6002?
The 6139-6002 is a vintage Seiko chronograph with a blue dial. Its significance sits within the broader Caliber 6139 story: Seiko says the movement launched in 1969 with a column wheel and vertical clutch, and describes it as one of the world’s first automatic chronographs. Seiko says those components improved the precision of elapsed-time measurement; that is the company’s historical characterization, not an independent comparison. Seiko’s Caliber 6139 history.
Specifications should be checked against the individual watch, rather than inferred from its reference alone. One specialist listing for an August 1971 6139-6002 describes a 6139B automatic movement, a single 30-minute chronograph register, an internal rotating bezel operated by the crown, a tachymeter scale, and day/date display. Those details describe that listing’s example, not a universal specification sheet for every watch bearing the reference. Specialist listing for an August 1971 example.
Is the blue Seiko Pogue the same watch William Pogue wore in space?
No—not according to the available identification. The Seiko Museum says astronaut William Pogue carried a Seiko 5 Sports Speed-Timer with Caliber 6139 aboard the Saturn IB on 16 November 1973. Its account supports the connection between Pogue and the 6139 family, but does not identify the blue 6139-6002 as his watch. Seiko Museum Ginza’s account of Pogue’s watch.

Collector accounts identify Pogue’s personal watch as a yellow-dial 6139-6005, while the 6139-6002 is a blue-dial reference. Bonhams has catalogued a blue-dial 6139-6002 as a collectible reference. The useful distinction is therefore between the family-level spaceflight story and the identity of the specific watch: “Pogue” may describe the association, but it does not make every 6139—or the blue 6002—the flight watch. A reference number or blue dial alone cannot establish originality or condition. A specialist dealer warns that the vintage market includes aftermarket components and watches assembled from parts. Treat listing claims as claims about that particular watch unless supported by clear evidence.

Confirm the reference and inspect the parts
- Ask for clear photographs of the case back, including the reference and serial markings, and request any available information linking those markings to the seller’s stated date.
- Request sharp images of the dial text, hands, bezel, movement, and bracelet. Ask which parts are original, replaced, relumed, refinished, or otherwise altered.
- Compare the parts and details with reliable specialist references. The sources available here do not provide a universal authentication checklist, so photographs and a seller’s description alone are not proof of independent authentication.
Assess condition and operation
- Look for polishing, corrosion, dial or hand damage, and legibility. Ask for close-ups where condition is difficult to assess in general photographs.
- Ask whether the chronograph and calendar functions operate correctly, and request a dated service record identifying the work performed and the watchmaker.
- Check whether the bracelet is original, whether it fits, and whether the seller is supplying a different bracelet or strap.
- Review the seller’s reputation and return terms before committing. The available sources do not establish a standardized condition-grading system or a current price range.
Read service and water-resistance claims narrowly
One specialist listing says its example had been serviced and was keeping time, but also says it was not guaranteed water resistant after gasket work. Both statements concern that seller’s specific watch; neither establishes the condition of another 6139-6002. Do not swim with or expose a vintage example to water unless a qualified watchmaker has assessed it and it has passed a current pressure test. Listing details and condition notes.
