A vintage Certina DS or DS-2 can make sense for a buyer who wants a practical Swiss watch with a distinctive mid-century durability story and plenty of design variation. The value case is real but needs qualification: Fratello’s Henry Black called them strong secondary-market value in June 2023 and said examples could be found under €500. That was an editorial assessment at the time, not a current price guide or evidence that a sound, original example is available at that price.
What distinguishes the Certina DS from the DS-2?
The original DS arrived in 1959. Certina calls its concept “Double Security” and dates the first DS Concept watch to that year in its official history. The name refers to a design intended to improve durability, not to a single specification shared by every watch bearing the DS name.
Fratello describes the original DS protection system as a movement suspended in an elastic shock-absorbing ring, working alongside an Incabloc shock absorber inside the movement. The arrangement allowed some movement within the case while helping protect the mechanism. This is Fratello’s account of the design; the details of any particular watch depend on its reference.
The DS-2 followed in 1968. Swatch Group presents it as the continuation of the DS-1 story begun nine years earlier in its 2022 DS-2 announcement. Fratello describes the vintage DS-2 as having a tonneau-shaped steel case, a partially recessed or guarded crown and a twin-seal arrangement. The family includes varied dials, date and no-date models, turning-bezel examples and chronographs. Those are family-level descriptions: confirm the features of the exact reference you are considering rather than assuming every DS-2 has them.

Why collectors find the family appealing
The appeal combines a clear technical story with wearable, sporty styling. Certina’s history also reports that a Swiss-led expedition wore a DS on the first successful ascent of Dhaulagiri in 1960. That is a brand-history claim, useful context for the line’s durability identity rather than proof of the present condition or performance of a vintage watch.
The DS-2 adds breadth. Its case shape and crown treatment give it a different look from the earlier DS, while the range of dial and complication variations lets buyers choose among quite different watches within the same family. That variety is also why a generic “DS-2 price” can be misleading: a simple date model and a chronograph, for example, are not automatically comparable.

Is a vintage Certina DS or DS-2 good value?
Henry Black wrote in Fratello on June 10, 2023 that these watches could be found for under €500 and described them as strong secondary-market value. Treat that figure as his dated opinion about availability, not a statistical average, a guaranteed entry price, or a current market benchmark. No recent completed-sale dataset by reference and condition is established here, so a reliable present-day price range cannot be stated.
To judge an asking price, compare recent sales of the same reference and configuration in similar condition. A family name alone is not enough: establish whether the watch is a DS or DS-2, identify any date or bezel variant, and distinguish standard models from chronographs or other variants. Then weigh originality, case wear and polishing, operating condition, service evidence, and what is included. Without those checks, a low price may simply reflect uncertainty or work the watch needs.

What to check before buying a vintage example
- Reference and configuration: Ask for the reference or other identifying details and verify that the dial, hands, crown, case and movement are consistent with the claimed model. DS and DS-2 cover multiple designs, not one uniform specification.
- Originality and condition: Look for clear photographs of the dial, hands, crown, case and movement. Assess case condition and polishing, and ask whether parts have been replaced. A listing’s description is not authentication.
- Function and service: Ask for service documentation and details of how the watch runs. If documentation is absent or unclear, budget for an inspection by a qualified watchmaker rather than inferring service condition from the DS reputation.
- What is included: Check whether the bracelet and any other parts are included, and whether they are appropriate to the watch. Compare offers on equivalent terms.
- Sale terms: Understand the seller’s return policy and what recourse is available if the watch differs from its description.
- Water resistance: Do not assume a vintage watch remains water-resistant because the DS concept was designed for durability. If water resistance matters, ask for watch-specific professional testing before exposing it to water.
Keep modern DS-2 specifications separate
The contemporary DS-2 Powermatic 80 announced in 2022 is a revival of the 1960s look, not a specification sheet for vintage DS-2 watches. Swatch Group lists that modern model with a 40 mm case width and 38 mm length, an automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve, a Nivachron balance spring and water resistance to 20 bar (200 m). None of those figures should be applied to a vintage example.
Certina’s current DS-2 catalog page displayed several automatic steel models at CHF 895–970 in the retrieved catalog snapshot. That is contemporary catalog pricing, not vintage resale evidence; check the current model and price directly if using it for comparison.
