“Longines column-wheel chronograph” describes a family of watches, not one set of specifications. The column wheel is part of the mechanism that controls chronograph timing; the exact reference determines whether a watch has one or multiple pushers, its calibre, dimensions, and other features. Longines’ official history discusses both monopusher models and column-wheel chronograph movements, while its 2018 manual maps specific references to calibres.
What does “column-wheel chronograph” mean?
A column wheel is part of the chronograph’s control mechanism: it coordinates the operations that start, stop, and reset the timing function. The term describes how the chronograph is controlled internally; by itself, it does not identify a watch’s case size, dial layout, water resistance, or exact reference. Longines’ historical explanation of the monopusher chronograph describes the column wheel in the context of that mechanism.

How does a Longines monopusher work?
A monopusher uses one button, usually integrated into the crown, to advance the chronograph through a fixed sequence: start, stop, then reset. A conventional two-pusher layout assigns start/stop and reset to separate pushers. The difference is the control sequence, not proof that one design is inherently more accurate than the other.
Longines’ brand history places one of its early wrist-worn monopusher chronographs as early as 1911. It separately dates the unveiling of calibre 13.33Z to 1913 and describes it as one of the earliest chronograph movements designed specifically for wristwatches. These are two distinct milestones in Longines’ historical account.

Which Longines calibres and references are involved?
The phrase does not point to a single calibre. Longines’ historical article says that in the early 2000s the brand asked ETA to develop an exclusive self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement, identified as L688. Longines’ 2018 English instructions for use associate reference L2.800 with calibre L788 and the “Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph” designation. The manual lists a 54-hour power reserve for that specific reference/calibre configuration; it also maps L788 and L688 to other models and collections.
Because the same broad description can cover different models, do not infer a watch’s calibre or functions from the words “column-wheel chronograph” alone. Start with the complete reference number and confirm its specifications in the relevant documentation.

What should you compare before buying?
Use the reference number to identify the exact watch, then compare the details that affect fit and use:
- Reference and calibre: Confirm both against Longines documentation; similar names do not guarantee identical movements or functions.
- Pusher layout: Check whether the chronograph is a monopusher or uses separate pushers.
- Case and display: Verify diameter, dial and counter layout, and date placement for the particular reference.
- Practical specifications: Check water resistance, stated power reserve, and whether the watch comes on a strap or bracelet.
- Condition and availability: For a pre-owned watch, assess the individual watch’s condition and documentation. For a new one, check Longines’ current regional catalog or an authorized retailer; the 2018 manual is not a current inventory listing.
Specifications should remain tied to the model they describe. For example, Bucherer’s retailer description gives a 41 mm case, L688, approximately 54-hour reserve, 3-bar water resistance, date, 30-minute counter, and 12-hour counter for its described configuration. The retrieved description does not establish the exact reference, so verify that match before using those figures to assess another watch.

What is known about current availability?
The Longines historical material and 2018 manual establish relevant history and reference/calibre information, but they do not establish which models remain in production or are available in a particular region today. Nor do they establish current prices or inventory. Check the regional Longines catalog or an authorized retailer for present availability and the exact specification of a watch under consideration.
