The M.A.D.Edition MAD1 matters less as a conventional MB&F launch than as a thank-you made tangible. Begun as a side project in 2014 and shared with MB&F’s friends and supporters in 2021, it recognized the employees, suppliers, collaborators and customers behind the brand’s work. Its separate label and unusual display also made it a distinct watch—not a smaller version of a Horological or Legacy Machine.
What is the M.A.D.Edition MAD1?
The MAD1 is an automatic wristwatch created by M.A.D.Edition, a label associated with MB&F. Fratello’s 2021 account describes it as a project that developed alongside MB&F’s established Horological and Legacy Machines, rather than as a replacement for either line. Its mechanical display is deliberately unconventional: hour and minute rings rotate around the case, with a large rotor placed on top.
The movement is reported to use a modified Miyota 821A automatic base. That is a different approach from the complex engineering and finishing associated with MB&F’s usual offerings. Fratello reported that the MAD1’s engineering and finishing did not match those usual standards, and that founder Max Büsser did not want to put the MB&F name on it in a way that might dilute the brand’s reputation. This rationale is reported by Fratello, rather than independently established here from a primary English-language source.
Why did the project begin?
The project began in 2014, but its purpose was not simply to add another watch to the catalogue. Fratello characterizes it as a way to thank the people who help make MB&F’s work possible: its staff, suppliers, creative collaborators and long-time customers. In the project video, Max Büsser is quoted by Fratello as saying, “It was an opportunity to say a big thank-you to those friends.”

That makes the MAD1’s significance partly symbolic. A finished watch usually draws attention to the brand and its buyer; this project also acknowledged the people and relationships that sit behind the product. The gesture did not establish a broad industry-wide change, but it made MB&F’s gratitude visible in a watch that supporters could wear.

Why was production limited?
According to Fratello, the same small watchmaking team modified and rebuilt the movement, assembled each watch and tested it, while continuing its other responsibilities. The article said that workload made production in the hundreds or thousands impractical at the time. The limitation was therefore not just a matter of choosing a small edition size: expanding output would have required more capacity and changes to the production setup.
Was the MAD1 going to become widely available?
In 2021, MB&F was reportedly considering broader availability, but the account said that would require production changes and increased capacity. That report is not confirmation that production later expanded, or that the watch is currently available at retail. Check with MB&F or an authorized retailer for present-day availability; no current stock, seller status or price is established by the 2021 account.

What does the MAD1 mean for MB&F fans?
For fans, the MAD1 is an unusual way to encounter the MB&F world without treating it as a conventional entry-level version of the brand’s core watches. Its rotating display gives it a recognizable mechanical spectacle, while its origin places emphasis on the network of people around the company. The project’s importance is consequently both personal and practical: it expressed gratitude, and it did so within the limits of a small team’s time and production capacity.
