Lume does more than make a watch readable after dark: it can help a diver find a bezel’s starting point, distinguish the hour hand from the minute hand, and give a dial a recognizable glow. Rolex’s Chromalight examples show these uses clearly, though they are not a definitive ranking of lume applications across the watch industry.
What lume does—and what these examples cover
Luminescent material makes selected watch components visible in low light. In the Rolex examples here, it appears on hands and hour markers, and in a capsule at a dive bezel’s zero marker. The examples are specific to Rolex; they do not establish which uses are most unique across all watchmaking.
Distinctive uses of lume
1. Reading the time display in darkness
On Rolex’s Deepsea and Submariner examples, the hands and hour markers glow blue in darkness, helping the wearer read the ordinary time display. This is lume’s familiar role, and the basis for more specialized uses. Rolex Deepsea and Rolex Submariner
2. Finding a dive bezel’s zero point
On those models, an embedded capsule at the bezel’s triangular zero marker contains luminescent material. That glowing starting point helps a diver orient the timing scale in darkness. 3. Telling the hour hand from the minute hand
Rolex’s Submariner history describes an early luminous disc on the hour hand that clearly distinguished it from the minute hand. Here lume works as a visual code, not simply as a way to make more of the display glow. The history does not give a date for when this feature first appeared. Rolex Submariner history
4. Keeping a specialized display legible in low light
The Explorer II pairs a Chromalight display with a broad orange hand that makes one rotation every 24 hours and a graduated bezel. The hand and bezel provide the 24-hour reading; lume helps keep the dial visible in low light. These functions complement one another—the lume itself does not indicate a second time zone. 5. Giving a display a color identity
Rolex describes Chromalight as white in daylight and blue in darkness. That contrast contributes both to legibility and to a recognizable visual character. The claim that Chromalight is exclusive to Rolex is Rolex’s own description, not an independent comparison across brands. Rolex Chromalight

Rolex says it unveiled Chromalight in 2008. The company describes it as a luminescent substance that stores energy from ambient light and releases it gradually as the light fades. Rolex’s stated composition includes aluminum, strontium, dysprosium, and europium.

According to Rolex, the substance begins as powder, is heated to a very high temperature, mixed with resin, and applied by hand to hands and indexes. The company’s account of dial production also describes Chromalight application as a manual step in the final stages.
