Zenith’s less familiar watches span an unusual El Primero, a newly revived 1969 sports design, and historically distinctive Pilot models. “Underrated” here means worth a closer look—not a claim that these watches are objectively underpriced or overlooked by the market. The available official sources describe their design and history, but do not measure popularity or transaction values.

Four Zenith watches and stories that deserve a closer look

1. Chronomaster Revival A3817: an unusual early El Primero

Released in 1971, the A3817 brought together two visual signatures that Zenith says were rarely combined in early El Primero designs: a sporty tonneau-shaped steel case and the tri-colour dial associated with the A386. Zenith reports that 1,000 examples were produced. The modern Chronomaster Revival preserves the angled case and white dial with grey and blue chronograph counters. Zenith’s A3817 Revival release also describes the historic model’s tachymeter scale as serving as a pulsometer, linking its layout to the 5 Hz El Primero escapement.

The appeal is the combination rather than a single complication: a recognizably 1970s case shape paired with a dial treatment more commonly associated with another early El Primero. The 1,000-piece production figure is a manufacturer-reported historical fact, not evidence of a particular resale value.

2. DEFY Revival A3643: silver-dial design from 1969

Zenith introduced the DEFY line in 1969; the A3643 is a 2026 revival of a design from that year. Its octagonal case, 14-sided bezel, and silver-toned dial distinguish it from more familiar chronograph-led Zenith designs. The current model has a 37 mm stainless-steel case, automatic Elite 670 movement running at 4 Hz, 50-hour power reserve, date, and steel ladder bracelet. Those specifications and worldwide boutique and authorized-retailer availability come from Zenith’s 2026 A3643 release.

Zenith’s 2026 US press material listed the A3643 at $7,800. Treat that as a US-market price reported at that time, not a universal or guaranteed current price; local prices and stock can change. The release is the appropriate reference for its market and date, while Zenith’s official US collection page showed the same listed A3643 price when accessed.

3. A3821: the Pilot watch with diver capability

Zenith’s Pilot history includes a less expected hybrid. The A3821, launched in 1972, combined an El Primero movement and Pilot-watch legibility with a rotating bezel, an integrated Gay Frères “lobster” bracelet, and a stated 300 metres of water resistance. Zenith presents it as a Pilot watch with diver capability in its ICONS: PILOT release. It is a vintage reference, so its historical specification does not establish the water resistance of any surviving example today.

4. Tipo CP-2 Cairelli: military chronograph history

The Tipo CP-2 Cairelli is another Pilot-related historical model documented by Zenith. Produced from 1968 to 1972 as a military-spec chronograph, it used the manual-winding calibre 146 DP. Its appeal is distinct from that of a modern Pilot: it is a period military chronograph whose condition, originality, and documentation matter as much as the reference name.

Zenith dates its PILOT trademark to 1888 and describes the history of these watches in the same ICONS: PILOT release. The company says vintage watches included in its ICONS programme are examined, restored, and certified by its Heritage Department. That statement concerns watches in the programme; it is not a certification claim about every vintage Zenith offered for sale.

Why Zenith’s story is broader than the El Primero

Calibre 135 and observatory chronometry

Zenith’s timeline describes Calibre 135 as a movement developed for observatory chronometry competition. The company credits it with more than 230 distinctions, including five consecutive first prizes in the wristwatch category from 1950 through 1954. These are Zenith’s own historical figures and the stated scope is competition results—not a direct measure of how a present-day watch performs. The same Zenith timeline dates the first El Primero reveal to January 10, 1969.

That context helps explain why the shortlist is not limited to one famous movement: Zenith’s documented history also includes competition-focused chronometry, a distinctive sports-watch line, and Pilot designs that crossed into military and diver territory.

What to check before buying

For a modern Revival

  • Confirm the exact model and reference; Revival variants can differ in dial, design, and price.
  • Check the current price and availability with a Zenith boutique or authorized retailer in your market. A US price or worldwide availability statement does not establish the price or stock at a specific local seller.
  • Match the case size, movement, reserve, date, and bracelet against the model’s current official specification before comparing it with another watch.

For a vintage Zenith

  • Check originality and reference correctness, including dial, hands, case, movement, and bracelet where applicable.
  • Ask for condition details, provenance, and service records rather than relying on the model name or a seller’s description alone.
  • Verify whether the specific watch has been examined or certified by Zenith’s Heritage Department. The ICONS programme’s process does not certify unrelated examples automatically.
  • For a vintage A3821, do not assume its original 300-metre rating remains valid: water resistance depends on the condition of that individual watch and should be assessed by a qualified watchmaker.

How to think about “underrated”

These models are defensible choices for a shortlist because official Zenith material documents unusual design combinations, historical roles, or competition significance. It does not establish that they are less popular than other Zeniths, cheaper than comparable watches, or likely to appreciate. Anyone evaluating value should use dated, market-specific transaction evidence for the exact reference rather than infer it from a limited production figure or an interesting backstory.
