That striking display also makes condition unusually important—clarity, scratches, debris and the marked crystal all deserve close inspection on a vintage example.
Why the Astrographic is called a mystery-dial watch
There are no conventional hands meeting at the center. Instead, three clear acrylic discs sit at different heights above the dial. The hour disc is closest to the dial, the minute disc sits above it, and the top disc carries the seconds indicator. Their transparent construction lets the markers appear to float, with the red seconds dot seeming to orbit the face.
Zodiac’s history describes the Astrographic’s floating hour and minute markers and red seconds marker. “Mystery dial” is a useful description of the visual effect; Zodiac itself describes the elements as floating hands.
Is the Zodiac Astrographic really from 1969?
Yes. Zodiac’s official brand history dates the Astrographic to 1969, and Fossil Group’s 50th-anniversary announcement likewise identifies 1969 as the original’s debut year. The related Olympos followed in 1970, a distinction that helps explain why the models’ dates are sometimes confused.

How the display and movement work
Floating discs, not central hands
The three-disc arrangement separates the hour, minute and seconds indications across transparent layers. It is the placement and transparency of those parts—not a hidden conventional hand set—that create the hovering appearance. Because the discs are exposed to view, clouding, scratches and debris can be especially conspicuous.

The SST example and its rate
In Fratello Watches’ 2021 review, the featured Astrographic SST is fitted with Zodiac caliber 88D. The article expands SST as “Split Second Timing” and reports a rate of 36,000 beats per hour, equivalent to ten beats per second. This is the specification reported for that reviewed SST, not a verified specification for every Astrographic variant.
Date adjustment
The reviewed watch displays the date at twelve o’clock, and the date advances by pressing the crown. The reviewer’s example required noticeable pressure. Treat that as an observation about one watch: check the date mechanism on the individual example rather than assuming the same feel or operation across the range.

Case styles and dimensions
Astrographics were made in more than one case design, including a tank-style shape. Fratello’s 2021 article describes its particular example as 40 mm in diameter; that figure should not be applied to every case variant. The sources do not establish a complete reference catalog or official production count.

The layered display is the watch’s defining feature and its main condition-sensitive area. Fratello’s hands-on observations concern one example, so use them as inspection prompts, not as a guarantee that every surviving watch has the same issues.

Check the discs and the space beneath the crystal
- Look for loss of transparency, haze, circular scratches or other marks on the clear discs.
- Inspect for dust or debris trapped under the crystal, where it may be visible against the dial and transparent layers.
- Ask for clear, well-lit photographs from several angles; reflections can make disc condition difficult to judge in a single image.
Examine the crystal’s markings
The crystal has printed markings on its underside. A generic replacement will not reproduce the original marked glass, and Fratello describes genuine replacements as difficult to obtain. Ask whether the crystal is original, whether its markings remain intact, and what documentation supports those claims. Richard Askham, quoted in the article about polishing mineral glass, cautioned: “Considering how much time the mineral glass polishing process took, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have endless patience.”
Test the date and operation in person
- Confirm that the date changes through the crown’s intended adjustment action and note whether it feels consistent rather than forcing it.
- Have the watch’s operation assessed by a competent watchmaker; a visually impressive display does not establish movement health.
- Request service documentation and distinguish a documented recent service from a seller’s unsupported description.
Compare the actual examples, not just the model name
When comparing listings, record the case shape and stated dimensions separately, then compare disc clarity, scratches, debris, crystal originality and markings, date operation, and available service evidence. The sources establish no current market price or pricing benchmark, so condition and documentation cannot be translated here into a claim that a particular example is good value.
