Short answer: Fortis says its WERK 17 movements were tested on a stratospheric balloon flight, and separately says it tested tool watches on a suborbital rocket in 2022. That supports Fortis’s “space-tested” framing, but the available accounts do not establish that a regular finished Stratoliner S-41 flew in orbit. The distinction matters: a movement test, a rocket-launch test and an orbital watch mission are not the same thing.
What did Fortis test?
The WERK 17 movement went on a stratospheric balloon
Fortis says WERK 17 movements were mounted on a gondola carried by a stratospheric balloon launched from Esrange Space Center in Sweden and recovered in Finland. The brand gives the flight duration as 1.5 hours. That is Fortis’s stated duration, not an independently measured performance result. Fortis’s Stratoliner collection page describes the movement test; a Fratello launch-era report dated May 13, 2022 also discusses the balloon test and says La Joux-Perret produced the movement for Fortis, with a modified bridge intended to improve robustness.
A separate account describes a 2022 rocket test
Fortis also says it and the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) launched a suborbital express rocket in 2022 to validate tool watches under rocket-launch conditions. This is a separate claim from the balloon flight carrying WERK 17 movements; the two events should not be treated as one test. Fratello’s May 2022 report said a rocket flight for the Stratoliner was planned for the future at that time, while Fortis’s current collection page describes a 2022 rocket test. Neither account, as available here, establishes that a standard finished S-41 flew in orbit. Fortis’s current account and Fratello’s 2022 report describe the events from different points in time.
How far does “first” go?
Fortis uses the heading “First Movement truly tested in Space.” That is the company’s promotional claim, not an independently established industry-wide first in the available evidence. The evidence supports describing WERK 17 as having undergone Fortis-reported stratospheric testing, alongside a separate brand-reported rocket test for tool watches. It does not support calling the standard Stratoliner orbital-qualified, NASA-certified or proven more accurate as a result.

What is the watch designed to do?
The S-41 is a mechanical chronograph with day-date display, rather than a watch whose appeal rests only on the space-testing story. Fortis describes the dial as using space-travel markings and blue Super-LumiNova X1 on the White Dust edition. The column-wheel chronograph is the movement’s timing function; the date and day display add everyday calendar utility. The 60-hour reserve is the maker’s listed figure, not a result of independent testing.
What should you consider before buying?
- Fit: The listed 50.5 mm lug-to-lug length and 14.5 mm thickness are relevant alongside the 41 mm diameter. Compare all three with a watch you already find comfortable, and check bracelet fit and adjustment options.
- Use: The chronograph and day-date suit someone who wants timing and calendar functions in a mechanical watch. The 200 m rating is the manufacturer’s specification; it does not turn the chronograph into a dedicated dive-watch design.
- Warranty: Fortis lists five years of manufacturer coverage. Confirm the terms and any conditions with the seller before purchase.
- Price and delivery: When accessed on October 7, 2026, Fortis’s page listed the watch at 5,050 CHF with taxes and duties included and estimated delivery at 2–4 days. Both price and delivery estimate can change, so check the live product page before ordering. Fortis product listing.
How does the S-41 fit into the newer Stratoliner range?
On September 13, 2025, Fortis announced four additional editions: Reentry, Gravity Black, Supernova Cool Gray and Supernova Cosmic Gray. The announcement describes Reentry with a hand-torched titanium dial, Gravity Black with a DLC-coated case, and the two Supernova editions with 18k gold rings. Fortis said each Supernova edition was limited to 13 pieces worldwide; current remaining availability is not established by that announcement. These details describe the announced editions and should not be assumed to apply to the White Dust S-41. Read Fortis’s September 13, 2025 announcement.
