The 2017 Monochrome-Watches documentary describes Omega’s Master Chronometer certification as a set of tests applied to a completed watch, extending beyond the movement-focused chronometer testing it attributes to COSC. It takes viewers through eight checks involving precision, magnetic exposure, water resistance, power reserve and rate in different positions. The account is a snapshot of the process reported on October 3, 2017—not a current official specification.
What the documentary says Master Chronometer certification adds
In its report on the manufacture tour, Monochrome-Watches says Omega and the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) established the certification rules. Omega conducted the tests internally, while METAS personnel supervised and monitored the process, sampled results and carried out retests. The report also says Omega movements continued to receive COSC chronometer certification.

The distinction the report draws is between movement-focused COSC testing and additional checks of the complete watch. It describes the certification as assessing precision and performance in differing conditions, including heat, cold, magnetic fields and shocks. These statements describe the arrangement as presented in the 2017 report; they do not establish how the process operates today. Read the Monochrome-Watches report and documentary account.
How the eight tests were described in 2017
The report lists eight tests. The figures below—including the 15,000-gauss field, four-day duration and six positions—are from its 2017 description, not a verified current METAS specification.

- Model 310.30.42.50.01.002
- Average daily precision: The report describes a four-day sequence in six positions and at two alternating temperatures, with the watch exposed to a 15,000-gauss magnetic field during the test.
- Movement function in a magnetic field: The movement is placed in two positions and exposed to 15,000 gauss; its operation is checked audibly.
- Whole-watch function in a magnetic field: The completed watch is exposed to 15,000 gauss and checked for function.
- Precision change after magnetic exposure: Daily precision before and after the magnetic exposure is compared.
- Water resistance: The watch is submerged while pressure is gradually raised to its stated water-resistance level. The report says some watches are tested beyond that level.
- Power reserve: The report describes checks near the beginning and end of the watch’s expected reserve.
- Rate at different power-reserve levels: Rate is measured in six positions at full power and again at one-third reserve.
- Rate in six positions: The watch’s rate is checked in six positions. The report gives 30 seconds per position for the described rate checks.
What the tests are intended to show
Precision across conditions
The sequence does not rely on a single rate reading in one position. As the report presents it, precision is observed across positions and temperatures, and rate behavior is checked at different levels of remaining power. That makes the test description about performance across a set of conditions, not just a movement’s result at one moment.
Magnetic resistance at movement and watch level
The separate checks of the movement and complete watch matter because the finished watch includes components beyond the movement. The documentary’s described sequence exposes both to a 15,000-gauss field, then checks function and compares precision before and after exposure.

Practical function and endurance
Water resistance and power reserve address different aspects of use: one tests the watch under pressure in water, while the other checks whether it runs across its expected reserve. The report’s account of testing some watches beyond their stated water-resistance level should not be read as a general claim about every model or as a recommendation to exceed its rating in use.

What this documentary can—and cannot—confirm
Monochrome-Watches published its documentary report on October 3, 2017, with Brice Goulard credited as author. It is a secondary account of a video and facility tour, not a current official METAS standard. Current certification requirements, operating arrangements and model availability are not established by that report. For those details, consult current official Omega or METAS information rather than treating the 2017 test sequence as present-day policy.
