The One I Got Away From: The 1971 King Seiko 5626-7000

A personal recollection anchored by the facts: the 5626-7000’s 56KS movement, front-opening monobloc case, 1971 transition, and vintage-buying checks.

The King Seiko 5626-7000 is a stainless-steel automatic 56KS with a restrained 37 mm case, a Japanese-English day-date, and a distinctive front-opening monobloc construction. Collector accounts place its production in Japan from 1968 to 1971, but the year alone does not identify every example: a substantial redesign arrived as the related 5626-7110. The watch I got away from remains a personal memory; the reference itself can be identified by its details.

What is the King Seiko 5626-7000?

It is an automatic King Seiko from the 56KS family, built around Seiko caliber 5626. The catalog lists automatic winding, hacking seconds, fine adjustment, a Japanese-English day/date display, a Hi-Beat designation, and a Hardlex crystal for the 5626-7000. These are model-guide specifications, not a guarantee that a particular surviving watch retains all original parts or is functioning as intended.

KingSeiko.info lists the stainless-steel version at 37 mm in diameter, 10 mm thick, and 42 mm lug-to-lug. The reference is also listed with a gold-plated case, so the dimensions and material should be checked against the specific example rather than assumed from the reference alone. KingSeiko.info’s 56KS catalog also lists model-specific crystal, crown, and gasket references, useful details to raise with a watchmaker when discussing parts or service.

What makes the 5626-7000 recognizable?

The front-opening monobloc case

A collector account describes the 5626-7000 case as a monobloc: access is from the front, by removing the bezel and crystal, rather than by opening a conventional screw-back. That construction changes how the watch is serviced and makes the case form part of its identity. Do not assume every watch bearing a similar dial or movement has the same case architecture. MoonAge Watches’ account of the 5626-7000 describes the construction.

The external regulator

The same collector account reports an external regulator reached through a small screw between the lower lugs. It is a useful identifying detail, but it is not a reason to adjust a vintage watch casually: regulation and service are best left to a watchmaker familiar with the movement and case.

Why 1971 matters—and why the year is not enough

MoonAge Watches places the 5626-7000’s Japanese-market production between 1968 and 1971, describing the run as fairly large; this is collector research, not an official Seiko production record. Its account says a major case and dial redesign in 1971 produced the 5626-7110. Later descriptions identify the 5626-7111 with a screw-back case and a revised movement, caliber 5626B. These reference-history details are reported by collectors, so a date on an advertisement or seller description cannot establish which configuration is present.

Seiko’s model guide lists the 5626-7040, 5626-7110, and 5626-7111 among related 5626 references. They belong in the same wider family, but their details should not be transferred to the 5626-7000. Caseback construction, dial, and movement markings all matter, particularly where parts may have been replaced or production crossed a model transition. The 56KS reference list is a useful starting point for checking the model designation.

Where the watch fits in King Seiko history

King Seiko began at Daini Seikosha in Tokyo’s Kameido district, within Seiko’s broader division of production duties between Daini and Suwa. The brand’s precision ambitions are often discussed through its 1969 45KCM, which Seiko identifies as the first King Seiko-branded model with a movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. That figure belongs to the 45KCM; Seiko’s history does not establish that the 5626-7000 runs at that rate. Seiko’s official King Seiko history provides this distinction.

Seiko says the arrival of quartz watches in 1969 contributed to King Seiko’s decline, and production eventually stopped. The brand relaunched in 2022 after a hiatus of more than 50 years. The 5626-7000 sits in the earlier mechanical story, not as evidence that every King Seiko shared the same movement specification or production history.

What to check before buying a 5626-7000

A vintage watch listing can identify a reference, but only photographs, documentation, and an informed inspection can help establish what is actually being offered. Before committing, ask for:

Seiko Men's SNXL72 Seiko 5 Automatic Gold-Tone Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch with Patterned Dial
  • Gold-tone bracelet watch with exhibition back featuring patterned dial and day/date window
  • 37 mm stainless steel case with Hardlex dial window
  • Automatic self-wind movement with analog display
  • Gold-tone stainless steel bracelet with fold-over clasp
  • Water resistant to 30 m (99 ft): In general, withstands splashes or brief immersion in water, but not suitable for swimming.
  • Clear identification: photographs of the dial, case sides, lower lugs, caseback, and movement markings. Compare the observed reference and construction with the seller’s description.
  • Case and parts details: confirmation of case material and whether the front-opening monobloc arrangement and external regulator are present. Ask about replaced crystal, crown, gaskets, dial, or other parts; a model guide’s part references do not establish current availability or universal interchangeability.
  • Service evidence: dated service documentation, if available, and a description of the watch’s current operation. A running watch is not, by itself, proof of recent service or sound condition.
  • Price context: judge the asking price using current comparable listings and the individual watch’s condition and evidence. The cited sources establish neither a reliable current market value nor an original 1971 retail price.

If the seller cannot provide useful photographs or a clear account of service and replaced parts, treat those unknowns as part of the decision rather than assuming originality. A watchmaker’s inspection is prudent before purchase, especially for a case that opens from the front.

The watch I got away from

The reasons a particular watch stays with someone are personal; model references and catalog entries cannot explain the circumstances of an encounter or why that example slipped away. What they can preserve is its identity: a 56KS automatic, a compact steel case in the cataloged version, and a case design that makes the 5626-7000 more than just another dial carrying a King Seiko name. For anyone searching for another, the reference is a starting point—not a substitute for checking the actual watch.
