Christie’s dates the reference’s introduction to 1955, describing it as an upgraded 6200; auction-house accounts connect it to Bond films, while Rolex’s own history places the Submariner in the broader development of professional diving watches.
Why the reference 6538 is called the Big Crown
Christie’s says the 6538 arrived in 1955 as an upgraded version of the reference 6200. Its defining feature was an 8 mm winding crown, unusually prominent in appearance. The case had no crown guards. Together, those traits explain the “Big Crown” nickname; they describe the reference’s design, not a claim that every surviving watch is otherwise configured identically. Christie’s reference 6538 lot essay.
What the Bond connection means
Christie’s identifies a reference 6538 as the watch worn by 007 in Dr. No. Sotheby’s associates a two-line 6538 with Sean Connery in Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. These are auction-house identifications of the film association; they do not establish that every 6538, or every detail of every screen-used watch, is documented in the same way. Rolex’s Submariner history provides the broader model context, while Sotheby’s account of the 6538 describes the Connery connection.
One documented 6538 example
A Christie’s circa-1957 catalogue example is described with a 37 mm stainless-steel case, automatic Calibre 1030 movement with 25 jewels, black dial, and a depth rating of 200 m (660 ft). Those are specifications for that catalogued watch and should not be treated as a complete specification sheet for every 6538. Rolex’s model history situates the Submariner’s 200 m/660 ft water-resistance milestone within the development of its professional diving watches. Christie’s circa-1957 lot description.

Dial and bezel details vary
Christie’s documents variation among 6538 dials, including gilt printing and different arrangements of dial text. Its discussion of the reference also describes a red bezel triangle and minute divisions for the first 15 minutes. These details are useful when describing a particular watch, but they are not a universal checklist for identifying or authenticating the reference. For a real example, compare its exact dial text and printing, crown and case configuration, bezel details, movement and case documentation, and provenance; auction descriptions should be read as descriptions of their specific lots unless they explicitly make a broader claim. Christie’s discussion of a 1957 ref. 6538.
Military-linked versions are not every 6538
Christie’s says special-issue examples were made for the British Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy between 1956 and 1958. This supports the existence of military-linked variants, not military service or ownership for any particular watch without individual documentation. A military claim about a specific 6538 therefore depends on the records and provenance for that watch. Christie’s reference 6538 essay.

What the historical record can—and cannot—tell a buyer
The 6538’s historical appeal rests on the combination of a recognizable large crown, early Submariner design, and the auction-house-documented Bond association. But the nickname alone does not establish a watch’s exact configuration, military history, or screen provenance. Nor do the historical accounts cited here provide a current market valuation or a full authentication procedure; those questions require current comparable sales and an assessment of the individual watch and its documentation.
