The Piaget Polo debuted in 1979, and Piaget still presents the Polo as a broad collection today. Its clearest through-line is a design conceived as an integrated whole: a bracelet with a watch, framed by a cushion-shaped dial inside a round case. Modern Polos retain parts of that visual language while varying widely in materials, sizes, and complications.
When did the Piaget Polo come out?
Piaget says the Polo launched in 1979 and was the Maison’s first named watch. The brand’s history page describes the original as a gold watch reflecting the era’s relaxed elegance and its connection to polo. Those are Piaget’s own accounts of the watch’s origin and inspiration, rather than independent historical findings. See Piaget’s history and its Polo collection page.
What made the original Polo distinctive?
A bracelet conceived with the watch
Piaget describes the original as an integrated-bracelet design, sculpted as one. The brand captures that idea in a sentence attributed to Yves G. Piaget: “The entire philosophy behind the Piaget Polo can be summed up in a single sentence: it is a bracelet featuring a watch, not a watch featuring a bracelet.” The collection page supplies no further role for the quoted speaker.
The cushion inside the round case
The Polo’s recognizable geometry places a cushion-shaped dial within a round case, a configuration Piaget calls “shape-in-shape.” The brand also says its gadroons—introduced in 1971—became part of the Polo’s visual signature. Piaget’s 2026 collection presentation puts the motif across the dials; that is the company’s description of its design language, not an independent account of the motif’s history.

How does the Polo 79 differ from the contemporary range?
“Vintage Polo” and “Polo 79” should not be treated as interchangeable terms for one specification. The original-era Polo is a 1979 design, while Polo 79 is one model name within Piaget’s present-day assortment. The official collection pages establish continuity in the integrated-bracelet concept and shape-in-shape look, but they do not establish that every modern model preserves every original feature or follows one uninterrupted specification.
Today’s range is broader than the original design proposition: Piaget’s listings include steel and gold watches as well as date, chronograph, skeleton, and more complex variants. The assortment differs by regional site. For instance, the US catalog lists Date, Field, Chronograph, and Flying Tourbillon Moonphase examples, while other regional collection pages also show Polo 79 and Signature variants. These are catalog snapshots, not a promise that each reference is available in every market. Consult the Piaget US watch catalog and the relevant regional Polo collection page for current listings.

What do current Polo specifications look like?
Specifications vary by reference; a single modern example shows why it is important not to generalize across the line. Piaget’s US product page lists reference G0A49022 as an automatic steel Polo Date with a 42 mm case diameter, 9.4 mm thickness, 10 bar water resistance, and a 50-hour power reserve. These figures apply to that listed model, not to the Polo collection as a whole.
| Model and market | Material and type | Diameter | Thickness | Water resistance | Power reserve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G0A49022, US product page | Steel, automatic Polo Date | 42 mm | 9.4 mm | 10 bar | 50 hours |
The values above are Piaget’s published specifications for this reference; they do not establish equivalent measurements for vintage watches, Polo 79, or other current variants.

How should you compare a vintage Polo with a current one?
Start with the exact reference rather than the family name. The official pages establish selected current specifications and brand design descriptions, but they cannot verify the condition, authenticity, or service history of an individual vintage watch. For a meaningful comparison, check:
- Case and dial geometry: compare the actual case shape and dial layout instead of assuming all Polos share one configuration.
- Bracelet or strap: note whether the watch has an integrated bracelet or a different configuration, and whether the bracelet is original to that example.
- Material and finishing: identify the case and bracelet material and inspect the specific watch’s finish and condition.
- Movement and complication: distinguish a date model from a chronograph, skeleton, or more complex watch; do not infer movement details from the Polo name alone.
- Dimensions and water resistance: use figures for the precise reference. A published rating for a current model does not establish a vintage watch’s present-day water resistance.
- Vintage condition, provenance, and service history: assess these for the specific watch. Piaget’s collection information does not establish any individual example’s authenticity, condition, or maintenance record.
Is the Piaget Polo still made?
Piaget currently presents a Polo collection, including the Polo 79 and contemporary variants, but its regional catalogs do not display identical assortments. Availability is market- and listing-specific, so check the appropriate Piaget regional page for the exact model rather than assuming a reference is offered everywhere.
