Google appears to be preparing a hidden Wear OS feature called “Sync permissions from phone”. It could copy app permissions—such as a location approval for Google Maps—from an Android phone to its paired watch, reducing repeated setup. As of August 16, 2026, however, reports still describe the control as hidden or unfinished, not as a generally available Pixel Watch feature.
What the proposed permission sync would do
The setting is intended to apply permissions granted to an app on the phone to the corresponding app on the connected watch. For example, if Google Maps has location permission on the phone, the watch version could receive the matching permission without asking you to repeat the decision.
That would address a common Wear OS annoyance: phone and watch versions of an app can request access separately even when they are part of the same service. The likely benefit is faster onboarding and more consistent behavior, not a major new watch capability.
The name “Sync permissions from phone” also points to a phone-to-watch operation. It does not establish that changing a permission on the watch would change the phone, or that both devices would remain permanently identical.

What it would not sync
App-permission copying is narrower than general device synchronization. The discovered setting should not be treated as a way to synchronize:
- App data or account content.
- Notification preferences.
- Google Account privacy controls.
- Android’s device-wide Location switch.
- Do Not Disturb or Bedtime modes.
- Automatic installation of every phone app on the watch.
- Permissions for an app that is not installed on the watch.
Google’s current Pixel Watch documentation still describes separate phone and watch location controls; that distinction is useful context while this proposed feature remains unconfirmed (Google Pixel Watch Help).
Where Google’s feature was found
The discovery was made through Android software inspection rather than a Google product announcement.
Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2
The earliest reported implementation was associated with Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2 in October 2023. Reports described an early sync-permissions setting and a phone-to-watch use case.

Pixel Watch companion app investigation
Later reporting tied related groundwork to Pixel Watch companion app version 2.3.0, released in the context of April 2024 investigations. A hidden server-side flag reportedly exposed a Device details entry, which then revealed the permission-sync control in Android’s device settings. The original discovery context was also documented by Mishaal Rahman’s Android News Feed.
Because the control was surfaced through hidden functionality and flags, its appearance would not by itself prove that the synchronization service works reliably.
Is it available on Pixel Watch now?
There is no confirmed general public rollout in the available evidence. Reports continue to characterize the toggle as hidden, inactive, or under development as of August 16, 2026. Most owners should not expect to find a normal, supported switch for it in the current Pixel Watch app.
Do not confuse a visible debug or server-controlled entry with a released feature. There is no verified launch date, stable settings path, or official Google announcement establishing that users can enable permission synchronization today. Current Pixel Watch app permissions can still be managed independently from the host phone; a Verizon support guide illustrates that phone-based management, but it is carrier documentation rather than a universal specification for every model and app.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
For that reason, forcing hidden flags, using debug menus, or changing a primary device with unofficial commands is not a sensible way to test the feature. A toggle that does nothing—or works only for internal testing—would not demonstrate a supported rollout.
Could other Wear OS watches use it?
Probably, but compatibility is not confirmed. The reported Device details framework is part of Android, and the behavior is aimed at connected Wear OS watches rather than a named Pixel Watch model alone. That leaves open the possibility of support for watches from Samsung, OnePlus, and other manufacturers.
Any eventual implementation would still depend on conditions such as:
- An Android phone and a compatible Wear OS companion setup. Android’s pairing model is described in the Android Developers documentation.
- A matching or compatible phone-and-watch app installed on both devices.
- Specific Android, Wear OS, companion-app, or Google Play services versions.
- Google’s rollout decisions by manufacturer, generation, region, or account.
No evidence establishes support for iPhone or Apple Watch; Pixel Watch requires an Android phone. Nor is Wear OS 4 a confirmed requirement. Earlier coverage presented that version as a possibility, not a final Google specification.

Which permissions might be covered?
Reports provide a general app-permission description and a Google Maps location example, not a complete permission matrix. Possible categories include:
- Location.
- Contacts and calendar.
- Microphone.
- Sensors or physical-activity access.
- Nearby-device or notification-related access where Android’s permission model treats it as an app permission.
That list is illustrative, not definitive. Some phone permissions have no direct watch equivalent, and watch hardware may require its own controls.

Automatic copying could make setup less tedious, but it could also transfer a decision that made sense on a phone to a very different device. A broad phone permission might be unnecessary for the watch, and synchronization could reduce the moment when a user deliberately reviews watch access.
A well-designed release would ideally show a per-app preview, allow selective approval, and offer an easy rollback. Until Google documents those safeguards, review permissions after any future synchronization rather than assuming that copying them is inherently safer.

Several implementation questions remain open:
- If the watch app is missing, there may be nothing to receive.
- Phone and watch packages or permission declarations may differ.
- Precise versus approximate location, “only while using the app,” and background access may not map cleanly.
- Health, Bluetooth, emergency-service, and sensor permissions can have device-specific controls.
- An app’s account consent or health-platform authorization remains separate from Android runtime permission.
- Reinstalling an app, replacing the phone, resetting the watch, or unpairing may require setup again.
What users can do in the meantime
- Manage the phone and watch app permissions separately using the controls currently provided by Android and the watch companion app.
- Keep Android, Wear OS, the companion app, and watch apps updated.
- Check the phone permission first, then inspect the corresponding watch app if it still prompts.
- Use Google’s official support channels for a publicly documented setting when one becomes available.
- Do not buy a Pixel Watch—or any other watch—solely because of this unreleased possibility.
The official Google Pixel Watch companion app and Pixel Watch Management Service listings are the appropriate places to identify current Google components, but neither listing confirms that permission synchronization is enabled.
Should this influence a watch purchase?
Not yet. Pixel Watch is the most directly relevant family because the discovery involved its companion app, while Samsung Galaxy Watch and OnePlus Watch represent other Wear OS options that could theoretically benefit if Google makes the framework broadly available. None has confirmed support for this particular feature.
Choose among watches based on phone compatibility, battery life, health features, software support, and LTE needs. Google’s watch catalog is at store.google.com/category/watches; Samsung’s is at samsung.com/us/watches; and OnePlus lists the OnePlus Watch 2 at oneplus.com/us/oneplus-watch-2. A compatible Android phone is required for the proposed workflow, but a newer or more expensive phone does not guarantee access. Google’s phone range is listed at store.google.com/category/phones.
Verdict
“Sync permissions from phone” is a credible quality-of-life feature under development, supported by Android code and companion-app discoveries dating back to 2023 and 2024. It could eliminate duplicate prompts for some phone-and-watch app pairs, but the evidence available through August 16, 2026 does not show a confirmed public launch, complete permission list, two-way behavior, or final device-compatibility policy. Treat it as a promising hidden capability—not a Pixel Watch feature you can rely on today.
