Which Omega Speedmaster is in the video?
Watch-industry coverage identifies the watch as the earlier-generation Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, fitted with caliber 1869. Fratello describes the movement as the focus of the video, while Hodinkee and Time+Tide Watches also identify the Apollo 8.
That identification matters because the Apollo 8 name has been used for more than one generation. The footage discussed in January 2025 coverage is associated with the earlier caliber 1869 version, not a generic or unspecified Speedmaster. A watch listing for a later edition should not be treated as an exact match to the model shown.
What does the slow-motion footage reveal?
Gears in motion
The camera’s close view makes the movement’s small mechanical parts legible: gears mesh and turn within the seconds train. Time+Tide describes the footage as showing the microscopic action of gear teeth engaging; Fratello notes views of the gears while the chronograph is both inactive and engaged.

Chronograph operation
Seeing the mechanism in both states helps illustrate that a chronograph is not just a hand on the dial: activating the function changes how parts of the movement interact. The footage is a visual explanation of that motion, not a test of timekeeping accuracy, durability, or manufacturing quality. A dramatic close-up alone cannot establish whether a watch is accurate or reveal a defect.
How was the video filmed?
January 2025 coverage reports production figures of 10,000 frames per second and 10× magnification, attributed to the video description reproduced in that coverage. These are reported production details, not independently verified measurements. The articles also name Phantom high-speed cameras and Laowa macro or microscope optics, but the exact lens configuration is not established by a primary production source in the available coverage.

Hodinkee described The Slow Mo Guys as having more than 15 million subscribers in its January 8, 2025 article. That is a dated channel description, not a current subscriber count.
