The tiny watch at the centre of this story is a Citizen: Fergus Nash reports that its Calibre 1500 analogue movement measures just 9 × 7 × 2 mm and appeared in Exceed Gold and ring watches. That makes it a remarkable candidate for the smallest analogue watch movement—not a proven winner in every “smallest watch” category. A complete watch, a mechanical movement, a quartz movement and a solar module are different things to compare.
What does “smallest watch” mean?
It depends on what is being measured. A movement is the mechanism inside a watch; the complete watch also includes its case, dial, crystal and other components. A claim about a tiny movement does not automatically mean the finished watch is the smallest to wear.
Movement type matters, too. Mechanical movements, which store energy in a wound spring, are not directly comparable to quartz movements powered by a battery, or to a solar module. Hand count and functions also affect what a movement must do. Nash’s article places the Citizen story alongside Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 101, a notably small mechanical movement, but the comparison is not a like-for-like record contest.
Citizen’s route to smaller movements
1967: Hi-Look and Calibre 1300
Nash reports that Citizen’s 1967 Hi-Look used the 21-jewel Calibre 1300, which he describes as the smallest three-hand movement of its time. His article gives no dimensions for it, so it cannot be compared numerically with later calibres here. 1978: the under-one-millimetre quartz milestone
Citizen’s official history identifies the 1978 Exceed Gold as the world’s first quartz watch with a movement under 1.00 mm thick. The milestone concerns thickness, not the movement’s overall footprint. Citizen’s centenary timeline records the achievement.
In its official design account, Citizen describes engineers stacking essential quartz components to pursue an extremely thin construction. The development target, attributed to researcher Hideki Inoue, was a thickness of “0 mm”—an engineering goal, not an achieved measurement. Citizen’s account also says the ultra-thin quartz watch used a temperature-compensation capacitor to achieve accuracy of ±10 seconds per month; this is a historical model specification, not a general figure for all Exceed Gold watches. Calibre 1500: the tiny analogue movement
Nash gives the Calibre 1500’s dimensions as 9 mm × 7 mm × 2 mm and reports that it was used in Citizen Exceed Gold watches and tiny ring watches. Those figures and uses are reported in his 2023 article; the official Citizen materials cited here corroborate the broader ultra-thin quartz history but do not independently confirm the Calibre 1500’s dimensions.
Nash calls it the smallest analogue watch movement ever made, qualifying the conclusion with “as far as I can tell.” It is best treated as a reported candidate rather than an established industry-wide record: his comparison excludes digital and atomic technology, and the available evidence does not establish an exhaustive ranking across watchmakers.

1998: a small solar module
Nash also reports that the 1998 Exceed Ladies Eco-Drive used Calibre B030, which he identifies as the world’s smallest three-hand solar module. His article does not give dimensions for the B030. Because it is a solar module rather than the Calibre 1500 movement described above, the two “smallest” claims refer to different categories.

What the record claim does—and does not—tell you
The Calibre 1500’s reported 9 × 7 × 2 mm dimensions make it exceptionally compact, but they do not settle which complete watch is smallest. The measurements describe the movement, not the outer dimensions of a case, and different technologies perform different jobs. The Exceed Gold’s under-1.00-mm milestone, for example, is specifically about movement thickness.

On the evidence presented by Nash and Citizen, the most careful conclusion is that Calibre 1500 is a compelling reported candidate for the smallest analogue watch movement. Citizen’s official history independently documents the Exceed Gold’s ultra-thin quartz achievement, but does not establish the Calibre 1500’s measurements or a universal smallest-ever ranking.
