The Speedmaster “Holy Grail” is Omega reference ST 376.0822, a two-year-production automatic Speedmaster that pairs a Moonwatch-style case with caliber 1045’s day/date calendar and 24-hour display. “Holy Grail” is a collector nickname—not Omega’s formal model name—and its story is closely tied to chronograph collector Chuck Maddox’s long search for the watch.
What is the Speedmaster Holy Grail?
Omega identifies ST 376.0822 as the 1987 Speedmaster Automatic. Its heritage page describes it as the first Speedmaster to combine an automatic movement with a Moonwatch case. The stainless-steel watch has a 40 mm case, black dial with luminous tritium, Hesalite crystal, baton hands and, in Omega’s listed configuration, a 1450/809 bracelet. Omega’s model history says it was produced for two years.
The case is thicker than a manual-wind Moonwatch to make room for the automatic movement, and its crown and chronograph pushers sit closer together. These details give it a familiar Speedmaster profile without making it simply another version of the traditional hand-wound Moonwatch.
What makes it technically distinctive?
Automatic caliber 1045
Caliber 1045 is Omega’s version of the Lemania 5100. Omega describes it as the successor to caliber 1040, with a day/date calendar added to the updated movement. In ST 376.0822, the movement drives an automatic chronograph along with calendar and 24-hour indications.

A busier, more information-rich dial
The day and date appear in windows, while a 24-hour day/night indicator sits at 12 o’clock. The central chronograph-minute hand is another defining feature of the Lemania 5100/1045 layout. Together, these make the dial more functionally busy than a conventional Moonwatch display; they do not make the watch a successor or replacement for the manual-wind model. Sotheby’s catalogue describes these functions on a specific 1988 example. Sotheby’s 2019 catalogue entry
Why is it called the “Holy Grail”?
The nickname grew from collector Chuck Maddox’s determined hunt for ST 376.0822. Fratello reports that Maddox began searching for the reference in 1999 and later used “Holy Grail” to describe it. Sotheby’s also credits Maddox with the playful name. It reflects the intensity of a collector’s quest and the watch’s relative difficulty to find, not a limited-edition designation issued by Omega. Fratello reproduces this statement from Maddox’s website: “I (and other owners) believe that were NASA to conduct a Chronograph contest like the one’s that resulted in the adoption of the moonwatch the watch most likely to topple the moonwatch would be the Grail.” This was Maddox’s opinion as a collector, not a NASA assessment. How many were made?
Omega’s cited model history says production lasted two years but does not give a total. Other figures are estimates, not an official Omega production ledger:
Rank #3
- Excellent condition - Minimal signs of wear consistent with pre-owned use.
- Wrist Size (in): 7.25, Case Height (mm): 14.00, Case Width (mm): 43.00
- This item is pre-owned and may show light signs of wear. Please refer to the condition and photos.
- Comes with a myGemma Certificate Of Authenticity.
- About 2,000 examples: Sotheby’s 2019 catalogue says this is the believed production figure.
- Approximately 1,800 steel examples: an undated estimate from the enthusiast site OmegaHolyGrail.com. OmegaHolyGrail.com collector guide
The estimates differ, and their counting scope may not be identical. The safest conclusion is that the reference was made in relatively small numbers, while an exact total is not established by the cited Omega source.
How does it compare with a traditional Moonwatch?
| Aspect | Speedmaster Holy Grail, ST 376.0822 | Traditional Moonwatch framing |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Automatic caliber 1045 | Manual-wind movement |
| Dial functions | Day/date, 24-hour indication and central chronograph-minute hand | Simpler conventional display without the Holy Grail’s day/date and 24-hour indications |
| Case | Moonwatch-style case; thicker for the automatic movement | Manual-wind Moonwatch case, thinner than the Holy Grail |
| Collector appeal | Distinctive reference, added functions and Maddox’s collector story | Familiarity and a visually simpler dial |
Neither approach is inherently better. The Holy Grail suits someone drawn to the automatic movement, extra indications and unusual place in the Speedmaster line; a traditional Moonwatch may appeal more to someone who prefers the familiar hand-wound format and cleaner display. The choice is personal, not a hierarchy.

What should you check when searching for one?
Originality can be complicated. Fratello notes that early published depictions included prototype details, while service parts and restoration choices became more consequential as collector interest grew. An authentic Omega component may be a later replacement rather than part of a particular watch’s original delivery configuration. The specialist guide also discusses reported variations in bezels, bracelets, end links, crystals, crowns and pushers, dials and hands. OmegaHolyGrail.com collector guide
That is why a photograph checklist—or the label “all original” in a listing—cannot by itself establish a watch’s configuration or authenticity. Check the individual example’s details and documentation with a qualified vintage-watch specialist familiar with Omega.

Configuration and documentation
Compare the movement and case serials, and review any available archive extract, service records and provenance. Inspect the dial, hands, bezel and crystal, as well as the bracelet and end links; ask which components are original, replaced or service parts. Omega lists bracelet 1450/809, but that should not be treated as a universal rule for every watch.
Sotheby’s 1988 example illustrates why configuration needs to be assessed watch by watch: its catalogue describes a 1450 bracelet with 808 end links, and an Omega archive extract confirming production on September 8, 1988, and delivery to Singapore. It is a documented case, not a template every example must match. Sotheby’s catalogue entry
Inspection and sale terms
Have an Omega-capable specialist assess the movement, case and parts history rather than relying on images alone. Before buying, understand the seller’s authentication and return terms. No single checklist can confirm every watch’s originality; the aim is to establish what is present, what is documented and what remains uncertain for the specific example.
What does a Speedmaster Holy Grail cost?
The cited sources do not establish a current market price. Fratello’s €20,000–€30,000 observation dates to its 2019 article, while Sotheby’s 2019 auction catalogue gave a US$12,000–18,000 estimate; that estimate is not a confirmed sale result. Neither figure should be treated as a current valuation. Condition, originality, documentation, provenance, sale date and market location can all affect an individual watch’s price.
