The SUPERLATIVE episode “Precision and Heritage with Felix Wallner of Hanhart Watches” is listed as a 65-minute, 45-second conversation hosted by Ariel Adams, founder of aBlogtoWatch, with Hanhart CEO Felix Wallner. Its description frames the discussion around the brand’s history, stopwatch production, military chronographs and modern engineering. That makes it a useful entry point to Hanhart—but the episode listing is a summary, not a transcript.
Episode details and topics
Podcast Republic lists the episode on December 1, 2025. Ivy.fm identifies Adams as host, Wallner as guest and gives the runtime as 65:45. Podcast Republic’s listing and Ivy.fm’s episode description provide directory information; they do not establish the exact sequence of conversation or verbatim remarks.
The description presents the conversation as spanning Hanhart’s origins, stopwatch making, military chronographs and German watchmaking. It also names movement regulation, hardened HD12 steel, anti-magnetic construction and monopusher modifications as technical themes. These are topics attributed to the episode description, not confirmed quotations or independently verified statements by Wallner.
Hanhart’s history: Swiss beginnings and German identity
Hanhart’s official account traces the company’s beginning to 1882, when Johann Adolf Hanhart opened a watch shop in Diessenhofen, Switzerland. The company says its breakthrough came in 1924, when Willy Hanhart introduced an affordable mechanical stopwatch. Its institutional history later places the start of the pilot-chronograph era in 1938. Hanhart’s manufactory history is the source for this chronology.

This timeline helps explain why Hanhart is associated both with Swiss origins and with German watchmaking. The episode description highlights Black Forest roots and Swiss horological ties; the company’s own history documents the early Swiss shop and later development. Those strands are better understood as parts of the brand’s history than reduced to a single-country origin story.
The historic 417 and flyback chronograph
Hanhart says its 417 E and 417 ES were produced for the German Air Force between 1953 and 1962. Its history also says the company introduced the manually wound Cal. 42 with switching-wheel flyback in 1957. These are historical claims from the manufacturer, and they describe the period models—not the specifications of today’s 417 ES.

Hanhart describes the historic 417 as the first pilot’s chronograph for the German armed forces. That wording should be read as the company’s characterization of the model’s role, rather than as a separately established procurement history.
What the modern Hanhart 417 ES offers
The contemporary 417 ES draws on the historic model’s design heritage, but it has its own construction and movement. Hanhart’s current product page lists a 42 mm stainless-steel case and a manually wound Sellita SW 510 M movement, with a stated maximum power reserve of 58 hours. It gives water resistance as 10 bar/10 ATM and case thickness as 13.3 mm including the domed crystal. The official 417 ES product page is the source for these current specifications.

Hanhart says the “ES” suffix refers to stainless steel. The current model’s product listing does not make it interchangeable with the historic 417 E or 417 ES: the old models belong to a different era and military context, and the historical Cal. 42 should not be confused with the modern watch’s listed Sellita movement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the in-house stopwatch figure
Ivy.fm’s episode description reports that more than 90 percent of Hanhart’s stopwatch components are made in-house today. The figure is attributable to that published description; no primary manufacturer source in the available material independently corroborates the percentage. It is therefore more accurate to treat it as a reported episode-description statistic than as verified company production data.
