Anthony Farrer operated a luxury-watch consignment business associated with “The Timepiece Gentleman.” The DOJ described clients sending watches for sale or sending money for Farrer to locate and buy specified watches. [C002]
In its plea and sentencing announcements, the DOJ said Farrer diverted watches or customer money for personal purposes. For consigned watches, prosecutors said he sold or otherwise disposed of some property and kept the proceeds. The DOJ also said that when clients asked about delayed purchases, Farrer sometimes sent them a different watch to reassure them or buy time. Those substitute watches often belonged to clients who had consigned them for sale and did not know their property was being used that way. [C002]

The 20-year figure came from the statutory maximum associated with the wire-fraud charge announced after Farrer’s November 2023 arrest. A statutory maximum is not the sentence ultimately imposed. [C001]

Farrer was not sentenced to 20 years. On October 11, 2024, he pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud. On January 31, 2025, Judge Josephine L. Staton sentenced him to 70 months in federal prison. [C002]

- Use a detailed written agreement. Record the watch’s identifying details, condition, accessories, commission, payment deadline and return terms.
- Document the handoff. Keep dated photographs, receipts, shipping or insurance records, and a signed custody acknowledgment.
- Verify the business independently. Check its legal identity, contact channels and physical address rather than relying only on social-media presence or testimonials.
- Clarify payment and possession. Ask how buyer funds are handled, when the seller will be paid and whether independent escrow is available.
- Consider independent authentication. Use a qualified party whose role and fees are disclosed.
- Pause if pressured. Urgency, unusual payment instructions or resistance to written terms are reasons to take more time.
