Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Seiko Prospex SLA043J1 and SLA037J1 are limited 2020 re-creations of the 1965 62MAS diver, but the SLA043J1 is not simply the same watch at a lower price. The key documented difference is the movement: the SLA043J1 uses Caliber 8L35, while the SLA037J1 uses the high-beat 8L55; their exterior details also differ. The dossier verifies a 2020 European launch price for the SLA043J1, but not a current or comparable USD price for both watches.
Two 62MAS re-creations, with important differences
Both references revisit Seiko’s 1965 diver, known as the 62MAS, as part of the brand’s 55th-anniversary program. They share a 39.9 mm diameter and 47.9 mm lug-to-lug measurement. Seiko lists the SLA043J1 with a 200 m diver’s rating and limits it to 1,700 pieces; Seiko’s anniversary page gives the SLA037J1 a 200 m rating and a 1,100-piece limit.
The title’s “$10K” framing should not be read as a verified current or universal US-dollar price. Monochrome Watches reported a EUR 4,800 launch price for the SLA043J1 in 2020. Seiko’s Singapore product page displays SGD 6,687.50, a regional listing that does not establish global availability or current resale value. These figures have different currencies and contexts and are not a like-for-like USD comparison.

The main mechanical difference: 8L35 vs. 8L55
Seiko lists the SLA043J1’s automatic 8L35 as a manually windable movement with a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour rate, approximately 50-hour power reserve, 26 jewels, and stated precision of +15 to -10 seconds per day. The SLA037J1 uses the high-beat 8L55. The dossier identifies the 8L55 as high-beat but does not establish a complete set of specifications for it, so comparisons beyond that distinction should be treated cautiously.
A higher beat rate is a meaningful part of the SLA037J1’s identity, but it is not by itself evidence that the watch is more accurate. Do not infer a precision advantage without comparable supporting specifications or testing.
How their exteriors differ
The two watches share a 62MAS-inspired outline, but they are not visually identical. The SLA043J1 has an all-brushed case, black bezel insert and strap, and a light-blue seconds hand. Specialist coverage describes the SLA037J1’s case finishing as brushed and Zaratsu polished. The finishing and bezel details are among the reasons to compare the specific reference rather than assume one is only a differently priced version of the other.

- AUTOMATIC MOVEMENT for seamless precision in every tick of this watch
- SCRATCH-RESISTANT CRYSTAL to maintain a pristine look even with daily wear and tear on your watch

For the SLA043J1, Seiko lists an Ever-Brilliant Steel case, box-shaped sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, silicone band, extra silicone strap, date display, unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, and 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance.
Why does the SLA037J1 cost more?
The high-beat 8L55, distinct finishing and presentation, and smaller production run help explain the SLA037J1’s collector positioning. Seiko lists 1,100 pieces for the SLA037J1 and 1,700 for the SLA043J1. Limited numbers indicate production quantities, not guaranteed future appreciation or a particular resale price.
Price comparisons should be dated and tied to a currency and market. Monochrome’s 2020 report gives the SLA043J1 a EUR 4,800 launch price; Seiko Singapore currently displays SGD 6,687.50 on its regional product listing. Neither figure is a current US resale price, and the research does not establish a comparable current USD price for the SLA037J1.

Historical context: the original 1965 diver
Seiko says the original 1965 watch was Japan’s first diver’s watch, with an automatic movement and 150 m water resistance. The company also says members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition used it from 1966 to 1969. These anniversary models are modern re-creations, not exact technical copies: they use updated movements, materials, and 200 m water resistance. See Seiko’s 2023 historical account.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the SLA043J1 if…
- You want the 62MAS re-creation with the documented 8L35 specifications.
- You prefer its all-brushed case, black bezel insert and strap, or light-blue seconds hand.
- You value the 1,700-piece limited run and the included extra silicone strap.
- You are comparing prices and can verify the date, region, currency, condition, and seller for each offer.
Choose the SLA037J1 if…
- The high-beat 8L55 is the main reason you are considering the watch.
- You prefer its brushed and Zaratsu-polished finishing.
- You value its 1,100-piece production limit, while recognizing that scarcity does not guarantee resale performance.
Buying a discontinued limited edition
Both watches were limited editions released in 2020. The research does not verify live stock or current resale prices, so treat any listing as an individual offer rather than evidence of a market-wide value. Before buying, check the exact reference, condition, included accessories, service history, seller reputation, and return terms. For an aftermarket strap, confirm the fit: Seiko lists a 19 mm lug width for the SLA043J1, but compatibility should be verified for the particular strap.
- Confirm the reference: Check that the listing and documentation identify the exact SLA043J1 or SLA037J1.
- Check what is included: For the SLA043J1, compare the listing with Seiko’s specification that an extra silicone strap is included.
- Inspect condition and service records: Ask about wear, repairs, service, and any pressure testing rather than assuming a diver’s rating remains valid.
- Assess the seller and terms: Review authentication procedures, transaction history, and return conditions.
- Compare like with like: Account for currency, region, date, condition, accessories, taxes, shipping, and inspection costs.
Bottom line
The SLA043J1 is a distinct, lower-positioned 62MAS re-creation, not an identical SLA037J1 at a discount. The clearest documented distinctions are the 8L35 versus high-beat 8L55, different exterior details, and production quantities of 1,700 versus 1,100. The “$10K” shorthand should not be treated as a verified current or universal USD price; compare dated, currency-specific offers instead.
