Tissot says the idea took a decade to develop before the original launched in 1985. The 2025 limited edition returns to that stone-built concept, pairing granite associated with the Jungfrau with updated components and a 38 mm case.
What is the Tissot RockWatch?
The RockWatch is a Tissot watch distinguished by a case made from granite rather than the metals or polymers more commonly used in watchmaking. Tissot places it within a longer history of experimenting with unconventional materials: the brand dates its fiberglass Sidéral to 1969 and its plastic mechanical Idea 2001 to 1971. The RockWatch extended that approach from manufactured materials to natural stone. Tissot’s pressroom describes the 1985 model as “the very first watch made of granite from the Swiss Alps.”
Tissot calls the RockWatch an icon and says customers rushed to boutiques after its launch. Those are the company’s claims about its reception; the available company account does not provide independent sales figures or other documentation of its worldwide cultural reach.
Why was granite a difficult watchmaking material?
Granite is not a uniform, easily worked case blank. Tissot says the stone’s instability made the industrial process difficult, and that conceiving the RockWatch took a decade. The project required a dedicated process, including purpose-built machines and tools. Unlike a conventional metal case that can be machined from a consistent stock, a natural-stone case has to be shaped while managing stresses within the material.

For the 2025 edition, Tissot describes a sequence intended to control those stresses: large blocks of granite recovered during renovation of the Jungfrau Tunnel are milled into cylinders, then cut into smaller sections. The stone is ground and hollowed with sub-millimeter precision to form the case. A steel container supports the movement and caseback inside the stone structure. These steps are Tissot’s account of production; they have not been independently inspected here. Tissot’s construction description also says artisans who worked on the original were entrusted with the new raw pieces.
When did the Tissot RockWatch come out?
Tissot says the original RockWatch launched in 1985, after roughly a decade of development. The company’s historical account describes the debut as the culmination of developing both the concept and an industrial process capable of making a granite watch case. It does not establish a more detailed launch chronology, original production total, or the identity of the original designer.

Is the new Tissot RockWatch made of granite?
Yes. Tissot identifies the 2025 case as genuine Jungfrau granite and says the stone used for the edition was recovered during renovation of the Jungfrau Tunnel. The company describes it arriving in large blocks before being milled and worked into the case. The product listing calls the dial natural stone as well, but the cited details do not establish that the dial and case are cut from the same individual piece.
