BOVET’s traditional handcrafts combine decoration with the technical demands of watchmaking: artisans engrave cases and movement parts, apply enamel and miniature painting to decorative surfaces, and finish bridges and plates while preserving the movement’s tolerances. The Maison traces its origins to Fleurier and says it was founded in 1822; its own history connects early decorated watches with Chinese imperial and aristocratic customers.
How BOVET’s crafts fit into a watch
Decoration is not confined to a watch’s exterior. BOVET describes decorative work on cases and dials as well as bridges, plates, and other movement components. Engraving and surface finishing can therefore involve parts that also have to perform within a mechanical system. The visual treatment must work around the component’s function, dimensions, and required tolerances.
BOVET’s history describes early pieces with pearl-set cases, enamel miniature painting, cloisonné and flinqué enamel, and fine engraving. The company also says the movements were finished and decorated. These historical descriptions show that ornament and movement work have long appeared together in the Maison’s account of its watchmaking.
Hand engraving: decoration with mechanical limits
BOVET says its artisans engrave by cutting directly into precious metal under magnification, using traditional tools rather than stamping or laser etching. The company describes the resulting variations in depth, light, and rhythm as part of each piece’s character. Its named techniques are Intaglio, Bas-Relief, Positive Engraving, Bris de Verre—a shattered-glass effect—and chiseling. Motifs may include scrolls, Fleurisanne patterns, or bespoke scenes.

Engraving can appear on cases, clasps, crowns, and buckles, as well as on bridges and plates inside the movement. The latter requires particular care: BOVET warns that removing too much material or cutting too deeply can compromise a component’s rigidity or tolerances. The craft is thus both visual and technical when the engraved surface is part of the mechanism.
As a current-model example, BOVET’s page for the Fleurier Virtuoso XI says components were engraved on both sides in the Maison’s hand-engraving and finishing workshop. That is the company’s description of that model, not a claim about every BOVET watch.

Hand-finishing movement components
BOVET names several finishing methods used on bridges and other parts, including polished bevels, perlage, straight graining, and circular Côtes de Genève. The company says finishing is carried out before assembly on visible and less visible surfaces.
- Polished bevels: BOVET says polishing bevels removes microscopic burrs as well as creating a bright edge.
- Perlage and straight graining: The company describes grained surfaces as helping retain lubricants.
- Circular Côtes de Genève: BOVET lists this as a bridge-finishing technique.
- Screw heads and slots: BOVET says properly finished screws help reduce damage during service.
These are BOVET’s explanations of the purposes of its finishing work. They also illustrate why the craft is not simply decoration added after the watch is made: surface treatment is planned as part of component preparation and assembly.

Enamel, miniature painting, and other decorative arts
BOVET’s historical account records enamel miniature paintings and cloisonné and flinqué enamel on historic pieces. The company describes subjects such as portraits, landscapes, and botanical imagery. Its terminology page groups enamel and miniature painting among the decorative arts associated with dials and movements.
The official material cited here names these arts but does not explain BOVET-specific firing or painting procedures step by step. It is therefore more accurate to describe the documented techniques and motifs than to assume a particular production sequence.

BOVET traces its origins to Fleurier and dates its founding to 1822. Its official history says the Maison employed more than 175 artisans in and around Fleurier during the 1800s. The same page reports fewer than 200 watchmaking workers in the Fleurier valley at the start of the 19th century, rising to more than 2,000 a century later. These are figures reported by BOVET for historical periods; the page does not give a publication year, and they should not be read as current workforce numbers.

What BOVET says makes its watches distinctive
In its FAQ, BOVET points to precious metals, sculptural movements, métiers d’art including engraving and miniature painting, hand-finishing, small production numbers, and assembly by a single watchmaker. The FAQ also describes Swiss production and says more than 95% of components are made in-house. These are company descriptions, not independently verified comparisons with other watchmakers. They do not establish that BOVET is uniquely superior to other maisons.
BOVET’s FAQ also says each timepiece has unique movement and case numbers, along with official documentation confirming its authenticity and origin. This is the Maison’s statement about its documentation.
