Straum’s debut was the Opphav, a mechanical watch collection launched in 2021. Contemporary coverage framed it through Norwegian myths, legends and landscape; the founders’ stated design aim was to set Norway’s rugged character against refined watchmaking. That combination—not a claim that the Opphav depicts a particular Viking story—is the key to understanding its “myths and modern luxury” positioning.

The Opphav was Straum’s first collection. The company’s official account identifies it as the debut, while describing the later Jan Mayen family as its second collection. The “Viking myths” element is best understood as launch-era storytelling rooted in Norway, not as evidence that the watch reproduces a specific saga, deity or historical artifact. Straum’s own description emphasizes the country’s natural colors and textures, and the contemporary feature places the debut among Norway’s myths, legends and landscape. Together, those sources support a broad cultural and environmental inspiration rather than a more specific mythological claim.
Rugged inspiration met a refined presentation
Co-founder Lasse Roxrud Farstad described the founders’ purpose as exploring Norway and presenting captivating stories in premium mechanical watches. He also said they drew inspiration from Norway’s “rough nature,” seeking “the juxtaposition of the rough with the sophisticated.” The luxury angle, then, is not separate from the landscape theme: it comes from translating rugged inspiration into a polished mechanical watch. Who created Straum and why does its background matter?
Straum’s official story names founders Lasse Roxrud Farstad and Øystein Helle Husby, both industrial designers with shared roots in Norway’s wilderness. They met in design school, reconnected in 2017, and launched the brand’s first collection in 2021, according to Straum’s account of its story. That background helps explain why the Opphav’s Norwegian setting was more than an exterior marketing theme: the founders connected their design practice to a place and landscape they knew.
How did the Opphav differ from Straum’s later collections?
The Opphav established the landscape-led debut. Jan Mayen followed as Straum’s second model family, with the brand describing it as a refinement of the concept for adventure use. Its specifications belong to Jan Mayen—not to the Opphav: Straum lists a 39 mm case, 100-meter water resistance, and a La Joux-Perret G101 movement with a 68-hour power reserve in its Jan Mayen announcement.

The distinction matters because Jan Mayen’s numbers are sometimes tempting shorthand for the brand as a whole. They cannot establish the Opphav’s dimensions, water resistance or movement; those details are not provided in the cited collection-history sources.

In August 2026, Straum announced Expedition as the first model in a Technical collection, setting it apart from the brand’s Inspired By pillar. The announcement describes Inspired By as the landscape-oriented side and Built For as the performance-and-use side. Straum said shipping for Expedition was expected in March 2027, a forward-looking schedule that may change.
