Its distinctive rubber-covered pushers were intended to improve resistance to water, while its name reflects the era’s space-race associations. It is best understood as a water-oriented member of Universal Genève’s Compax family.
What is the Universal Genève Space-Compax?
Universal Genève dates the Space-Compax’s launch to 1967 and says it was designed for water-sports enthusiasts. The name suggests the space race, but the brand says the watch’s purpose was not space exploration. The intended distinction was practical: a chronograph adapted for use around water.

The Space-Compax belongs to the broader Compax chronograph family. Phillips reports that period catalogs described it as the “underwater version of the Compax,” with armored pushers and a hermetic crown. That description captures the model’s central idea: retaining chronograph controls while adding features meant to improve protection against water.
What makes its design different?
Rubber-covered pushers
The pushers are the model’s defining visual and functional feature. Universal Genève says their rubber construction enhanced resistance to depth. They distinguish the Space-Compax from more conventional-looking Compax chronographs, though the available descriptions do not establish a specific depth rating for all examples.

Chronograph layout and case
A specialist model reference describes an asymmetrical case and a 30-minute register at 3 o’clock. It also identifies the UG 85 calibre as based on the Valjoux 72. These details help explain the watch’s design, but should be treated as specialist reference information rather than specifications confirmed for every individual example.
How do the Space-Compax generations differ?
Phillips identifies two dial generations, distinguished by their subdial color:
| Generation | Subdial appearance | Phillips’ description |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | Silver subdials | Phillips characterizes the silver-register configuration as rarer. |
| Second generation | Black subdials | Phillips identifies this as the later dial version. |
When comparing watches, note the dial configuration alongside the reference, condition, originality, and available provenance. The cited sources establish the two dial styles, but do not provide a basis for ranking individual watches by condition or assigning current price differences to either generation.
What does a documented example tell us?
A Phillips listing for reference 885104/01 describes a watch manufactured in 1966 according to an accompanying archive extract. This predates Universal Genève’s stated 1967 launch date; the dates refer to different things—the recorded manufacture year of one example and the brand’s stated model launch. The listing specifies stainless steel, a manual UG 85 movement with 17 jewels, and a diameter of 37.5 mm.
That catalogued watch had a black dial with silver registers, a red chronograph hand, rubber chronograph pushers, and a stainless-steel bracelet. These are details of the listed example, not specifications that should automatically be applied to every Space-Compax.
A specialist reference gives the model period as 1966–1968, while Universal Genève dates the launch to 1967. The exact year therefore depends on whether the subject is a particular surviving example or the model’s launch as described by the brand.

Phillips recorded a sale of the reference 885104/01 for CHF 13,750 at the Geneva Watch Auction: X, held November 9–10, 2019. That is a historical result for one watch, not a current valuation, a representative price range, or a guide to what another example should cost. Condition, originality, documentation, and the terms of any later sale require separate assessment.
How to assess a Space-Compax you are considering
- Confirm the reference and records. Compare the watch’s reference and any archive documentation with the seller’s description; one documented 885104/01 example does not establish the specifications of every reference or watch.
- Identify the dial generation. Check whether the subdials are silver or black, and make sure the description does not present one generation as the only correct configuration.
- Examine the distinctive components. Pay particular attention to the rubber pushers, case, dial, hands, and movement. The sources describe the pushers as central to the design, but do not establish the originality or condition of any watch currently offered for sale.
- Evaluate provenance and condition independently. A past auction result cannot substitute for an examination of the individual watch and its documentation.
Universal Genève’s modern context
Universal Genève’s history page says Partners Group and CVC Capital Partners acquired the brand in 2023. That company-history update provides context for the name’s modern chapter; it does not change the Space-Compax’s late-1960s origin or establish present-day production or availability of this vintage model.
