The TAG Heuer Carrera 1964 CS3111 makes a persuasive case as a compact, manually wound take on the early Carrera—but the €5,200 figure in Fratello’s 2021 Wrist Game or Crying Shame article was the asking price of one particular pre-owned watch, not a current valuation. Whether that example was worth the money depends on the listing’s condition and originality as much as on the reference’s vintage-inspired design.
What is the TAG Heuer Carrera 1964 CS3111?
CS3111 is the black-dial, stainless-steel reference in TAG Heuer’s 1996 Carrera re-edition range. The line drew on the first Carrera, introduced in 1963, and paired familiar design cues with a modern re-edition rather than being an original 1960s watch. TAG Heuer’s vintage history identifies a 36 mm case and a hand-wound Lemania 1873 movement.
That movement mattered to the design: TAG Heuer says its relatively compact size allowed the re-edition to retain the original case dimensions. The decimal scale was one of the versions offered in 1963, linking the CS3111 to the earlier Carrera’s functional, legible dial approach.
How it differs from the original
The re-edition omits the word “Carrera” above the Heuer shield, a detail TAG Heuer identifies on the original. That makes the dial less text-heavy while offering a useful visual distinction between the 1996 model and its 1960s inspiration. Fratello’s account also describes the re-edition as having an acrylic crystal, screw-in case back, large Heuer-signed crown and leather straps; it says the black-dial version came with a racing strap. Those construction and strap details are Fratello’s description, not specifications confirmed on TAG Heuer’s vintage-history page. Fratello’s June 30, 2021 article

How the CS3111 fits into the 1996 re-edition range
| Reference | Dial | Case material |
|---|---|---|
| CS3111 | Black | Stainless steel |
| CS3110 | White | Stainless steel |
| CS3140 | White | 18-karat gold |
TAG Heuer’s vintage history identifies these three versions. The CS3111 is the straightforward choice for someone who wants the dark dial; the CS3110 keeps the steel case with a white dial, while the CS3140 combines a white dial with a gold case. TAG Heuer’s model history
Was the €5,200 example worth it?
In the 2021 article, Michael Stockton considered one CS3111 listed on Chrono24 for €5,200. He described it as having its original box, no papers, a Heuer buckle and a strap he believed was not original. He thought the watch looked to be in good condition, but that was his assessment of that individual listing at the time—not a present inspection or a judgment about every CS3111. - Protected from Water: Waterproof for durability
That price is best read as the historical asking price of a single example, not a market average, a completed-sale figure or a current benchmark. The available information does not establish a present-day price range or show that the original listing remains available. A later marketplace search result surfaced another CS3111 listing, but its existence does not establish current availability or value. Chrono24 CS3111 search results
What to check before buying a pre-owned CS3111
Because the 2021 price relates to one listing, judge any watch you find on its own evidence rather than using that figure as a target. Request clear, recent photographs and ask the seller to document the watch and its condition.

- VERIFY YOUR WATCH MODEL & MEASURE THE CORRECT SIZE USING A RULER – Watch Parts Are Model and Size Specific. Please Verify Compatibility Before Purchasing.
- Compatibility & Size: 22mm Rubber Strap Band, compatible with Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16, 17, 36, CAV551B (Black).
- Ensure Perfect Fit: Verify the size, color, and model compatibility with your specific watch before purchasing to ensure a perfect fit and avoid returns or exchanges.
- Compatibility Check: Double-check your watch's requirements and compatibility details to ensure the product meets your needs. This will help you avoid any issues with returns or exchanges.
- Aftermarket Product: This is an aftermarket/generic made to original factory specs for a precise fit.
- Condition: Inspect the case, dial, hands and crystal for wear, damage or signs of refinishing. Fratello’s favorable impression applied only to the example it covered.
- Originality: Ask whether the strap, buckle and other included parts are original, and request close-up photographs. Fratello believed the 2021 listing’s strap was not original.
- Service history: Request dated service records and ask what work was performed. The 2021 example was described as having no papers; that is not the same as having no service history, and the article does not establish its service status.
- Accessories and provenance: Confirm exactly what is included and whether the seller can substantiate the watch’s identity and ownership history. A box was reported with the 2021 example, but papers were not.
- Seller evidence and asking price: Evaluate the seller’s documentation, return terms and explanation of the price. The historical €5,200 ask is not enough to establish what a different watch should cost today.
Verdict: wrist game or crying shame?
The CS3111 has a clear appeal: a 36 mm steel case, black dial, decimal scale and manual-wind Lemania 1873 give the 1996 re-edition a close connection to the proportions and spirit of the early Carrera. Its distinction from the original is also legible rather than hidden: the re-edition drops the “Carrera” text above the Heuer shield. The model is an appealing choice for a buyer who values that restrained, historically rooted package and is comfortable assessing a pre-owned manual-wind watch carefully.
For the specific 2021 Chrono24 example, €5,200 could only be judged against its condition, originality and documentation at that time. The evidence supports neither calling that sum a bargain nor applying it as today’s fair price. Stockton’s concise praise was: “The real positive is that TAG kept so darn much from the original otherwise.”
