Consumer smart glasses can combine cameras, microphones, speakers and a display; an EMG wristband can translate subtle muscle activity into input. Haptic wearables, exosuits and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are also being developed, but mostly as research or assistive systems—not as everyday cybernetic gear.
The key distinction is what each device does: glasses deliver visual or audio information, body-worn sensors provide input, and haptics or prostheses aim to return touch or force feedback. Those pieces have very different levels of maturity, and making them comfortable and dependable together remains a substantial challenge.
What wearable technology from cyberpunk is real?
The closest consumer examples are smart glasses and wrist-worn muscle-sensing input. Other technologies that evoke cyberpunk—wearable haptics, powered suits, neural control and sensory-feedback prostheses—are real areas of research, but their existence as prototypes or experiments does not mean they are generally available products.
| Technology | What it does | Evidence and maturity |
|---|---|---|
| Display-equipped smart glasses | Put a display and other electronic features in an eyeglass-style device. | Meta announced Ray-Ban Display in 2025; this is a manufacturer-described consumer product. |
| EMG wristband | Uses muscle activity at the wrist as a subtle input method. | Meta announced a wristband bundled with Ray-Ban Display; product claims are vendor-reported. |
| BCI-controlled exoskeleton | Uses brain-signal input as part of control for a lower-limb exoskeleton. | A 2026 IEEE study tested a custom system with ten participants during real-time walking experiments. |
| Wearable haptics and soft suits | Provide tactile sensations or other body-worn feedback. | Covered in a 2025 review and demonstrated in research prototypes, including Kinethreads. |
| Neural sensory feedback for prostheses | Aims to return sensation from a sensor-equipped prosthetic hand or arm through nerve interfaces. | DARPA’s HAPTIX program describes research goals, not proof of a widely available or approved product. |
These categories solve different problems. Glasses have to present information through optics and a wearable display; muscle or brain signals are ways to control a device; haptics and prosthetic feedback try to communicate information back through the body. A collection of devices is not automatically an integrated cybernetic system.

Are AR glasses ready for everyday use?
Some smart glasses are being sold, but that is not the same as having compact, unobtrusive augmented reality (AR) that works comfortably all day. Chakravarthula and Pattanaik’s 2025 IEEE review described existing AR eyeglass displays as bulky and said that, in the authors’ assessment, a socially acceptable eyeglasses-style display had not yet been realized.
Meta announced Ray-Ban Display on September 17, 2025, describing it as having a full-color display and announcing U.S. availability beginning September 30, 2025. That availability statement comes from the manufacturer; current stock and availability in other regions are not established here. The announcement also bundled the glasses with an EMG wristband. Meta framed the design goal as “technology that keeps you tuned in to the world around you, not distracted from it.” That is the company’s intent, not an independent assessment of comfort or usefulness.
For everyday use, a glasses display is only one part of the equation. The form factor must balance display capability and field of view with comfort, wear time, power and a suitable way to control it. Smart glasses should therefore be judged by the task they support, not by the assumption that any built-in display is full AR.

What does an EMG wristband add—and is it a cyberpunk watch?
Electromyography (EMG) detects electrical activity associated with muscle action. A wrist-worn EMG device can use subtle muscle signals as input, which may let a wearer control a connected interface without making a large gesture. Meta announced its Neural Band as the wrist input paired with Ray-Ban Display.
That makes an EMG band a body-worn controller, not necessarily a watch. The announcement does not establish that the band is a standalone timepiece, nor does a wrist location alone make it one. For watch readers, the interesting shift is that a familiar wearable location can serve as an interface as well as a place to wear a watch; those are distinct product roles.
Meta said its EMG research involved “nearly 200,000 research participants.” This is a company-reported figure about the research behind the Neural Band, not an independently verified participant count for a published trial. It should not be read as a measure of product adoption or proof that every wearer will get reliable control.

Can a wearable read your thoughts?
Not in the broad, effortless sense implied by science fiction. A BCI measures or interprets signals for a defined task; results from one device and protocol do not establish general-purpose mind-reading.
A 2026 IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering study combined a hybrid BCI, AR glasses and a custom lower-limb exoskeleton. Ten participants completed real-time walking experiments. The authors reported 95.06% average SSVEP classification accuracy for that system and experiment. This is a study result tied to its participants, apparatus and protocol—not a consumer-device benchmark, a measure of arbitrary thought decoding, or evidence that a person can control any machine by thinking.
Do exoskeleton suits work outside the lab?
There is no single answer for every kind of exoskeleton. A soft haptic suit and a powered lower-limb exoskeleton have different purposes and engineering demands. The 2026 BCI study demonstrates a custom exoskeleton in a controlled walking experiment, not a general-purpose powered suit ready for everyday use.

The Future Interfaces Group describes Kinethreads as a soft full-body haptic exosuit prototype. Its project page, accessed in 2026, lists an approximate prototype cost of $400, a weight under 5 kg, a wear time of less than 30 seconds, and force up to 120 N. These are project-page prototype specifications, not independently verified retail specifications or a commercial price. The project is evidence of a research direction, not an offer to buy a consumer exosuit.
More broadly, an exosuit’s usefulness depends on its intended task, fit, comfort, sensing and actuation. The available examples do not establish a timeline for commonplace, affordable consumer powered suits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can wearable haptics and prosthetic feedback actually provide?
Wearable haptics aim to communicate information through touch or force at a chosen body location. Fleck and colleagues’ 2025 review of wearable multisensory haptics highlights design considerations including body location, the skin interface, user comfort and preservation of the intended feedback. A sensation that is technically generated but uncomfortable or hard to distinguish may not be useful to the wearer.

Prosthetic sensory feedback has a more specific assistive purpose. DARPA’s HAPTIX program pursues precision control and sensory feedback for sensor-equipped prosthetic hands and arms, including bidirectional peripheral nerve interfaces. The program description establishes a research goal; it does not establish that general-purpose cybernetic implants are available or broadly approved.
How to tell a product from a prototype
When a wearable is described as “cyberpunk,” check the evidence behind the claim. A manufacturer announcement can establish what a company says it has launched or plans to sell; a research paper reports results for a defined study; a project page describes a prototype. Those are not interchangeable kinds of proof.
- Identify the task: Is the device displaying information, sensing muscle activity, providing haptic feedback, or assisting movement?
- Check the input and output: Note whether it uses cameras, eye movement, muscle signals or brain signals, and whether it returns visual, audio, tactile or force information.
- Look for the system it depends on: Establish whether the wearable operates on its own or is part of a setup involving a phone, glasses, custom software or a research apparatus. Do not infer independence if the source does not state it.
- Assess the evidence level: Separate a retail product and manufacturer announcement from a clinical or assistive system, a small controlled experiment, and a research prototype.
- Consider fit and wear: For haptics, ask where the device contacts the body, how comfortable that interface is, and whether it preserves useful feedback. For glasses, consider the display form factor and wear time.
These checks also help prevent a common category error: a product with a display is not automatically full AR, a wrist sensor is not automatically a watch, and a successful lab demonstration is not proof of everyday readiness.
How soon will the full cyberpunk wearable arrive?
The evidence points to gradual convergence, not a dependable arrival date for an all-day, affordable system that seamlessly combines unobtrusive AR, reliable body-based control, useful haptics and powered assistance. Each component has its own constraints in optics, comfort, sensing, power, actuation, privacy or clinical validation. Current products and studies show pieces of that future; they do not establish when—or whether—they will work together as a commonplace consumer package.
