There is no single timeless answer to “the world’s thinnest watch”: the leader depends on the category, whether the figure measures the complete watch or just its movement, and whether the model is a production watch. In Wallpaper*’s 2026 report, Konstantin Chaykin’s production ThinKing measured 1.65 mm; Monochrome’s 2024 retrospective had identified Bulgari’s 1.70 mm Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC as the mechanical leader. Below, each figure is tied to its category and source date.
How to compare thin watches
“Thinnest” is a dated category claim, not a universal certification. A time-only automatic is not competing in the same category as a tourbillon or chronograph, and the thickness of a movement cannot be compared directly with that of a complete watch. No independent standards-body registry harmonizes the claims cited here.
- Check the measurement: case or complete-watch thickness is the relevant figure for the whole watch; a movement measurement describes only the calibre.
- Check the category: complications and movement types define different comparison sets.
- Check the status and date: production models, prototypes and later variants should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Check the source: a manufacturer’s page is useful for its own product specifications; category records in editorial roundups are secondary reporting.
Thinnest mechanical watch overall
In 2024, Monochrome reported Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC at 1.70 mm, following the 1.80 mm Octo Finissimo Ultra and Richard Mille RM UP-01 at 1.75 mm. Monochrome describes the Bulgari’s architecture as using the caseback as the movement’s mainplate. These are dated category comparisons in Monochrome’s retrospective, not a permanent record registry. Monochrome’s retrospective
Wallpaper* reported in 2026 that Konstantin Chaykin had unveiled a production version of the ThinKing measuring 1.65 mm, and called it the thinnest mechanical watch. That later production-status report makes it important to distinguish the newer claim from Monochrome’s 2024 account. Chaykin said, “Making a watch that thin was a real challenge, but life would be very ordinary without it,” as quoted by Wallpaper*. Wallpaper*’s ThinKing report

Production status also affects practicality. Monochrome’s earlier ThinKing coverage said it was too soon to know whether the watch would be made and noted that the bare watch could not be wound or adjusted without its carrier. That caveat belongs to the earlier configuration described there; it should not be assumed to describe the production version Wallpaper* later reported. Monochrome’s retrospective
Thinnest tourbillon watches
Piaget called its Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon the thinnest tourbillon watch when it was revealed in 2024. The complete watch measures 2 mm thick and 41.5 mm in diameter; Piaget guarantees water resistance to 20 metres. This is a reveal-time manufacturer claim, not the latest figure in every subsequent comparison. Piaget’s product page

A later Luxury Bazaar table lists Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon at 1.85 mm in 2025. That secondary comparison means Piaget’s 2 mm figure should be read as a historical reveal-time record, rather than the current category lead. Luxury Bazaar’s category table
Thinnest automatic and time-only automatic watches
Monochrome identifies Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic as the thinnest automatic watch in its category comparison: 3.95 mm for the complete watch, with a 1.95 mm movement. It cites a peripheral rotor as part of the design approach. The movement figure is not the case thickness. Monochrome’s retrospective

For a distinct, time-only automatic comparison, Monochrome names Piaget’s Altiplano Ultimate 910P at 4.30 mm. It is a different category from an automatic watch with a tourbillon, so the two figures should not be read as a head-to-head ranking. Monochrome’s retrospective
Thinnest chronographs
Monochrome reports Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT at 6.90 mm, describing its column wheel, horizontal clutch and peripheral rotor. The same retrospective gives 8.75 mm for a later steel version, illustrating why a record claim needs the exact variant and date. It separately reports 7.40 mm for Bulgari’s tourbillon chronograph; that is another complication category, not a direct substitute for a standard chronograph figure. Monochrome’s retrospective

Thinnest automatic minute-repeater tourbillon
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 release calls the Master Hybris Mechanica Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Tourbillon the thinnest automatic minute repeater tourbillon. Its complete case is 8.25 mm thick; the calibre alone is 5 mm thick. Keep those measurements separate: the 5 mm figure is not the watch’s overall thickness. The release describes an integrated architecture, an openworked movement, a flying tourbillon and a minute repeater. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 release
A thin quartz and ceramic reference
Rado’s True Thinline is a useful contemporary example, but its specifications do not establish an overall quartz-watch record. Rado lists a 4.9 mm case and a 1 mm movement, and describes it as the brand’s thinnest ceramic watch. The official page does not state a publication date. Rado’s True Thinline page

What the figures do—and do not—tell you
These watches demonstrate how radically different constructions and complications can produce small thickness figures, but a millimetre ranking alone does not establish comparative durability or everyday convenience. The evidence cited here supports Piaget’s stated 20-metre water resistance and Monochrome’s carrier caveat for the earlier ThinKing configuration; it does not provide a full, standardized comparison of winding, setting, servicing or robustness across the watches.
