YEMA says Mario Andretti wore a YEMA Rallye throughout May 1969, including during his Indianapolis 500 qualifying and victory. That history links Andretti to the Rallye, but it does not establish that every watch later described as a “Mario Andretti” model—or any LeJour-branded example—is the exact watch he wore. For a specific watch, check its branding, reference, movement and provenance.
What is the connection between Mario Andretti and the YEMA Rallye?
YEMA’s official history says Andretti wore a YEMA Rallye during his historic Indianapolis victory in 1969.
This is a manufacturer-published account, not proof of the identity or provenance of any particular watch now for sale. YEMA separately dates the first Rallygraf to 1967. That is the family’s stated origin date; it should not be confused with the date of every later reference or with proof that a particular Rallygraf is Andretti’s personal watch.
What does “YEMA Rallygraf Mario Andretti” mean?
A Gazette Drouot catalogue describes a YEMA Rallygraf “Mario Andretti,” reference 93016, as circa 1968–70. Its listed details apply to that catalogue-described reference and example—not automatically to every Rallye, Rallygraf or LeJour-branded watch.

- Check Lug Width: Choose the same size as your watch lug width. This leather watch band fits standard spring-bar watches and gives 18 mm watches a clean replacement fit
- Vintage Brown Look: The brown leather surface adds a warm, aged tone to your watch, making this brown leather watch band easy to pair with chronograph, field, and vintage-style watches
- Rally-Style Design: The perforated hole layout gives this rally-style watch strap a classic racing-inspired look while reducing the solid contact area on the wrist. It helps the strap feel more relaxed for daily wear and adds a sportier character than a plain leather watch band, especially when paired with panda dial, field, or vintage chronograph watches
- Comfortable Daily Wear: The leather strap has a flexible feel that gradually adapts to the wrist with use. Contrast stitching, leather keepers, and a polished stainless steel buckle create a balanced look that is not too formal or too sporty. This replacement watch band works well for office wear, weekend outfits, travel, and casual daily use
- Natural Leather Character: The leather watch strap may show natural marks, color variation, and a richer surface tone over time, giving each strap a more personal vintage look. Leather bands are not designed for swimming, showering, or long water exposure. If the strap gets lightly wet, wipe it dry and let it air naturally
- Steel chronograph case measuring 39 mm in diameter
- Black signed dial, fixed black tachymeter bezel and red stripes on the left
- Applied square markers, running seconds at 9 o’clock and chronograph minutes at 3 o’clock
- Hand-wound Valjoux 7733 movement
- Blocked bezel and a need for service, as reported for that individual example
The catalogue says the Valjoux 7733 version appeared in 1968 and describes two registers, red lines and checkered flags. Treat those details as the catalogue’s account of the reference, rather than universal specifications for the model family. Its listing also says a limited reissue was made in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of Andretti’s victory; that claim is attributable to the catalogue.
Does LeJour branding prove it is Andretti’s watch?
No. The available brand history establishes YEMA’s account of Andretti wearing a YEMA Rallye, but it does not establish that a LeJour-branded example is the exact watch he wore. Nor does a shared design, seller description or “Mario Andretti” label establish an individual watch’s provenance.

- Chronograph Movement with Tachymeter: Features a tachymeter index along its outer minute track to measure speed
- Stainless Steel Adjustable Bracelet: Stainless steel bracelet fits comfortably on your wrist and can be adjusted for a custom fit
- Sturdy Stainless Steel Watch Case: Sleek and scratch-resistant stainless steel
- Iconic 60's Design: This timepiece retains the classic Marlin features with a domed acrylic crystal lens and retro-style square markers at 3, 9, and 12 o'clock
- Water Resistant to 50 Meters
Descriptions of examples vary. For instance, a Cartellino listing describes a Rallye “Mario Andretti” with a different movement description from the Gazette Drouot reference 93016 catalogue. An auction account from Watches of Knightsbridge also describes a circa-1969 YEMA Rallye associated with Andretti and identifies a manual-wind Valjoux 7733, checkered flags and racing stripes. Such listings document what was described in those sales; they do not authenticate other watches or establish the provenance of a watch currently offered.
How to assess a vintage Rallye or Rallygraf
Evaluate the specific watch rather than relying on a model nickname. Before buying, compare the visible watch and its supporting documentation against the seller’s claims.

- Record the branding. Note exactly what the dial and caseback say—YEMA, LeJour or another marking—and ask for clear photographs of both.
- Identify the reference. Request the reference number and compare the case, dial and layout with documentation for that exact reference. A resemblance to reference 93016 is not proof of identical specifications.
- Verify the movement. Ask for a movement photograph and have a qualified watchmaker confirm the caliber. Do not assume every Rallye or Rallygraf used a Valjoux 7733.
- Check condition and service history. Confirm whether the chronograph functions, whether the bezel turns or is blocked, and when the watch was last serviced. The Gazette Drouot example was reported as running but needing service, illustrating why an “it runs” claim alone is not a condition assessment.
- Ask what supports provenance. A model name or racing association is not personal ownership evidence. Request any documentation that connects the individual watch to Andretti, and distinguish that evidence from the broader model history.
A specialist familiar with vintage chronographs can inspect the movement and condition before purchase. The cited auction catalogue gives one reference’s diameter as 39 mm; measure or confirm the particular watch rather than applying that figure to every vintage example.
How does a current Rallygraf differ from a vintage Rallye?
YEMA’s current Rallygraf collection describes contemporary models as inspired by vintage Rallygraf chronographs. One current US product page for the Rallygraf Meca-Quartz II lists a Seiko VK64 mechanical-quartz hybrid caliber, 40 mm case, 20 mm lugs, tachymetric bezel, 2 mm double-dome K1 mineral crystal and stated 100 m water resistance. The page says the watch is assembled in France.

- Glass: Sapphire Crystal Glass With Anti-Reflective Coating / Case: 316L High precision stainless steel, individually numbered
- Movement: Miyota 6S11 Chronograph (Quartz)
- Water resistance: 5 ATM tested (Avoid use when diving)
- Size: 41 mm wide, 11 mm thick
- Strap: Italian leather (genuine) with Pin buckle, 20mm width
These are specifications for that modern variant, not for reference 93016 or every current Rallygraf. The VK64 hybrid movement is not the hand-wound Valjoux 7733 listed for the vintage catalogue example. Choose based on whether you want a period watch with reference-specific condition and service considerations or a contemporary interpretation with current product availability and warranty terms to confirm with YEMA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
YEMA’s history supports the brand’s stated connection between Andretti and a YEMA Rallye in May 1969. The auction and catalogue records show that watches have been described and sold under “Mario Andretti” Rallye or Rallygraf names. They do not establish that every watch carrying that description is authentic, original in all parts, or the watch Andretti wore. No reliable production totals, scarcity figures, price trends or typical market values are established by these cited sources, so those claims should not be inferred from the nickname or auction coverage.
