This Holographic Watch Fits on a Wrist—Sort Of, but It Isn’t a True Hologram

This maker prototype projects smartphone video onto synthetic mist. Its vapor generator sits at the wrist, while a separate projector is worn near the elbow.

JLaservideo’s wearable display puts a video image on synthetic mist, not into a true three-dimensional hologram. The maker prototype does strap to an arm, but its mist generator sits at the wrist while a separate projector is worn nearer the elbow—so “watch” is a loose description, and the arrangement is not especially comfortable.

What the wearable display actually shows

Hackster.io’s report by Cameron Coward describes a smartphone supplying a live video feed that is projected onto a cloud of synthetic mist. The result is a two-dimensional image on a visible surface, rather than a volumetric image that appears to occupy space.

“Holographic” is a familiar shorthand for the effect, but it overstates what the setup does. A more precise description is a wearable mist-screen projector.

How the components are worn

The prototype is split into two arm-mounted parts: a vapor generator strapped to the wrist and a projector worn closer to the elbow. That separation helps explain why it is not simply a conventional watch with a display on its face.

The reported build repurposes a miniature projector and an ultrasonic humidifier. The devices were dismantled to reduce their size, then fitted into 3D-printed enclosures. The humidifier’s ultrasonic waves excite water molecules to create the mist used as the projection surface.

What is known—and not known—about the build

The report identifies component categories and the general construction approach, but it does not give exact component models, dimensions, power requirements, runtime, enclosure files, firmware, or a step-by-step build. Those omissions matter: the report does not establish that any arbitrary miniature projector and retail humidifier will work together, or provide enough detail to reproduce this particular prototype from a parts list.

It also gives no measured brightness, resolution, viewing distance, battery life, or comfort assessment. The report characterizes the setup as impractical and not especially comfortable, but offers no measurements to quantify those impressions.

Safety and wearability

Hackster describes the water vapor as harmless, while warning that direct contact with the ultrasonic module may be dangerous. That warning applies to the module; the report does not provide a broader safety assessment of the complete wearable or a set of handling instructions.

For a wristwatch wearer, the practical distinction is straightforward: this is a maker prototype with hardware distributed along the arm, not a compact everyday watch. Its visual effect is the point, but the available report does not establish everyday usability.
