Some watches turn over to reveal a second side; fewer have a second working dial. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso makes the distinction clear: its reversible case can expose a blank, personalised caseback, while Duoface models add another time-zone display and Duetto models show the same time in a different style.
What does “more than one face” mean in a watch?
It can describe either a reversible case or a watch with two functional dials. Those are not the same thing. A reversible watch turns to expose its reverse, which may simply be a protective or decorative caseback. A double-face or dual-dial watch has a working display on each side.
The Reverso is built around the reversible-case idea, but not every Reverso has a second dial. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the reverse can be left as a blank metal surface or used for engraving and other artistry; some models instead put another dial on that side. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s history of the Reverso distinguishes its Duoface and Duetto approaches.
How the Reverso’s second face works
Duoface: a second time zone
Jaeger-LeCoultre describes Duoface models as providing a second time-zone display on the reverse. In its account of the Reverso Tribute Duoface Small Seconds, the company says the two back-to-back dials each have their own set of hands and are driven by a single movement. That is a functional second face, not merely a caseback that happens to be visible when the case turns over. The manufacturer’s press page gives that technical description.

Duetto: the same time in another style
Duetto models are described by Jaeger-LeCoultre as showing the same time in a different style on the reverse. The appeal is a change of look rather than a second time zone. The company’s terminology is specific to its Reverso collection, so it should not be treated as a generic label for every reversible watch.
A named example: Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar
The Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar, reference Q3918420, is a stainless-steel example with two contrasting faces. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes a night/day display as part of the model. The secondary face and its display are therefore more than a decorative reverse, though the exact layout and features should be checked on the official product page for the reference being considered. Why the reversible case became the Reverso’s signature
Jaeger-LeCoultre places the Reverso’s emergence in the Art Deco era and says it was commercialised in 1931. In the company’s historical account, the swivelling case began as the defining idea: it could turn to protect the watch’s face, while the reverse later became a surface for engraving and other artistry—or, in certain versions, a second dial. The manufacturer’s press history ties the 1931 date to the commercialisation of the Reverso by Spécialités Horlogères, founded by de Trey and LeCoultre. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s press history provides its account of that origin.
Jaeger-LeCoultre identifies Lionel Favre as its Head of Design and quotes him describing the concept: “The Reverso is the synthesis of form and function, a design based on a fundamental idea: It’s reversal, making it one of the most inventive wristwatches in history.” That is the designer’s and manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent industry consensus.

What to compare when choosing a two-sided watch
Start by checking what is actually on the reverse. A blank or personalised caseback offers a different experience from a working dial, and a working dial may serve a different purpose depending on the model.
- Purpose of the reverse: Is it a blank or artistic caseback, a second time zone, or another presentation of the same time?
- Readability: Check the secondary display’s hands, indications and layout, not just the fact that the watch has two faces.
- Case experience: Consider whether you value turning the case over as part of wearing the watch, as well as the display revealed on the other side.
- Exact reference: Confirm the model name and reference. Features of a Duoface or Duetto should not be assumed to apply to every Reverso.
The available manufacturer documentation supports a focused comparison of Reverso variants, not a fair cross-brand ranking of reversible or dual-dial watches. Availability of an individual reference can change, so verify current stock and specifications with the manufacturer or an authorised retailer.
